are the lights and billboards of one times square on yet?
Most of them have been on for a while now, only appears that work is still being done on the strip/frame screens.
So is this old billboard coming down, or new billboard going up?
Quite a few things to unpack from this week.
Marriott Marquis: Lots of work, especially the removal of the old billboard, took place throughout the whole week.
AE Outfitters: The top billboard (previously blank) now has a new advertisement for the first time since early 2025 (I believe).
1585 Broadway: Similar to the Marriott, quite a bit of progress has taken place. You can see, on the second tier of the base, the entire visible left side is covered by panels.
Going back earlier in the thread I’m pretty sure they made charging a fee for toilet was made illegal. I remember as a child lots of places charged a dime to open the booth. There was a coin slot. This is different from saying you have to be a paying customer.
Surprisingly fast pace at the Marriott Marquis if you ask me, as it’s been less than two weeks since my last post here.
To the left is the old wraparound billboard (barely any left!) which is losing panels by the day. Meanwhile, the new display is almost 75% installed and could reach 100% by the end of the month.
(And we can’t forget about Morgan Stanley HQ in the background) ![]()
The longer the billboard is down the less money they make from it, measured in millions of dollars.
love the marquis balcony
March 1, 2026 update
The Marriott is down to its last panels! Even better, the right-hand side of the new billboard is being tested with a very nice aquatic display.
Project completion date expected to be this month.
Broadway’s Imperial Theatre, long beloved and just as long squeezed, is lining up a major expansion that could finally give Midtown theatergoers some breathing room. The Shubert Organization has filed plans to tack a five-floor annex onto the landmarked house at 249 West 45th Street, with the goal of widening the tight lobby, adding accessible restrooms and boosting dressing and backstage space. The new structure would rise on a vacant lot immediately west of the skinny 45th Street ticket wing, reshaping the theatre’s street frontage. Shubert is pitching the work as a modernization that keeps the original 1923 auditorium intact while fixing circulation headaches and upgrading patron amenities.
The backstage stairs are a nightmare.
Carter building has a lot of potential.
March 11-12 update
Installation of the new billboard seems to have finished! Overall, this is great news for Times Square, as once the whole display lights up the plaza will be more immersive than ever. ![]()
It’s the same size right?… They only made it more high-def, right?
