The One Times Square Observatory is open and they charge $2 for the public restroom.

If you’re charging for access, that shit is not public.

a lot of restrooms in NYC are restricted to paying customers due to the unfortunate reality that they are an ideal place for drug abuse (no supervision for privacy) and that is a huge liability for businesses. Some places have locks on their bathrooms and they only provide the combinations on receipts for purchases.
I’d pay $2 in NYC if I had no other option. Last time in the city I had to hold it until I made it to my train in Grand Central.

I feel the same way about public transportation.

If it’s not free (like, say, the Staten Island Ferry) it should be unlawful to call it public.

I understand that and I wasn’t saying I was for or against it. I’m just saying it’s kinda funny to call it a public restroom when I can’t enter it without paying.

I get charging for a standalone restroom that is not part of a paid attraction, but the fact that you likely have to pay for admission to visit the observatory just makes this seem like a cash grab. Imagine if the Empire State Building or other famous attractions charged a fee to use their restrooms? There would be outrage.

I will have to to see if the admission for the bathroom is separate from the observation because that sounds like an easy way to lose money.

Makes you wonder if they’ll charge for suicide booths like in Futurama

Lots of stuff going on in Times Square…almost like a “great reset” in my opinion. On the top right corner is 1585 Broadway’s base (renovation ongoing), and in the center you can see Marriott Marquis’ wraparound billboard.

Here is an article about the Marriott billboard:

NRF 2026: Farewell to Times Square’s Iconic Marriott LED | invidis

Meanwhile, AE Outfitters’ top billboard (to the right of the turned off Marriott display) has been blank since the CrowdStrike incident in July 2024, read more in this article:

But could Dream Outdoor finally finish the AE billboard makeover by Q2 this year?

Once this “great reset” wraps up after Marriott Marquis, American Eagle, and 1585 Broadway billboard installations are 100% finished, Times Square is going to shine brighter than ever!
