Not NY Vintage, not NY Buildings: but an interesting photo of a NYC subway scene.
Girl carries mirror on subway, propped in perfect angle to catch image of man sitting near by: all juxtaposed with a creepy Grub Hub Billboard. “Bite the ham that feeds you” ? wtf
We need a thread for funny, candid, interesting, or just odd NYC people photos…
Old 1886 US Army Building
Overlooked period of time where it was surrounded by giant office towers
Destruction c. 1983 - Every floor above the base was skinned and covered with glass, with 10 new floors being added.
Robert Mulero
The gutted interior c. 1984
Modern day 3 New York Plaza, equally as banal as the other 3 buildings
Well now that’s a shame. Cool photos of the deconstruction but the result is utterly banal as you say. Makes me so glad that they spent the time, the effort, and the $$$ to salvage and incorporate as much of the Domino Sugar plant into the redesign as possible.
Definitely follow WhatIsNewYork on Instagram. It’s a treasure trove of the odd and absurd. https://instagram.com/whatisnewyork?igshid=MWI4MTIyMDE=
I can’t imagine what living a full life in New York, say the 50 years between 1870-1920, would have been like around then. The whole city just constantly leveling up to heights that world had never seen. The crush of humanity inundating the streets with boats arriving from all over the world every day. The first suspension bridges that were the grandest and seemed to defy gravity being built at your doorstep, then the subway taking over. The invention/employment of the lightbulb and electricity flickering up from the financial district, the camera, railroads, then the car. ETC, ETC…
We live now in an era of constant change too, but that specific time period must have been bewildering to a much larger extent to someone who lived those 50 years in NYC.

@Mackensen awesome map. Thanks for sharing all those pictures of it! I’m a big fan of maps, particularly pictorial maps. I was surprised it doesn’t include a depiction of the Singer building (which would certainly merit to be added), but perhaps I overlooked.
Yes it would be worth an addition ,but the map designer has drawn the following buildings in this tourist map:
Hudson Terminal
Equitable Life Building
Chase National Bank Building
There is also no other space available for the Singer Building on the map.
Infos from a book 1949
A old view.
Found this on Ebay, and one of the images is one that @Mackensen posted recently

Not long after Chrysler topped out, but what is the Noyes Building that they say would rise to 1,600 feet?
Wow, I’ve never heard of this one. Google hasn’t turned up much of anything. Would love to know more if anyone can find the info!

Perhaps a private historian knows more.?
