Was that “I LOVE NY” on the twin towers real?
I’ve seen this ad a few times and they’ve done similar things so I wouldn’t doubt it
Late 1968:
View from 26 Federal Plaza showing the Municipal Building and Urban Renewal
Similar view showing notably Chase Manhattan Plaza, Marine Midland Bank, and the Singer Building demolition site, as well as the Woolworth Building

I also found some other shots of the WTC construction and the Singer Building site carnage.

Demolition, circa late 1968

1970; demolition of the 18-story Roebling Building seen from the roof of 139 Broadway
Those urban ‘renewal’ photos give me stomach pain.
Same. It’s sad that it wasn’t until around 1967 or 1968 (if I remember right) that the LPC was able to intervene to save anything (like those townhouses on the west side). By then there was literally just one building left by the Brooklyn Bridge, and the south street area was further ahead than that.

In my mostly unsuccessful attempts to find demolition pictures of the old 140 Broadway building complex, I thought I’d share other notable things:
