Well that’s dumb. There’s a reason public transit is… public.
New Jersey has privatized public buses. (I have no idea if they are considered reliable or a good use of taxpayer funds).
Private Carriers | New Jersey Public Transportation Corporation
Oh I didn’t know that.
I’d prefer a state-run service over private ones.
Nothing is stopping a company from dropping “unprofitable” but necessary service, much like what Coach USA did, forcing NJT to intervene to keep service running. Taxpayers are going to pay for it regardless of who runs it but at least with NJT they can’t just abandon service on short notice.
Last two times I was at Suburban Station weekdays AM the restroom was gated shut, not just closed for cleaning.
Welcome to the future.
Be sure to thank your state senate republicans for willingly letting public transit die in Pennsylvania. Owning the Libs is more important than improving the lives of your constituents, after all
The people that vote them in hate transit.
So is Philly just doomed, transit-wise? It doesn’t look like the state is going to do anything to save SEPTA. Maybe there will be outcry when half the bus and train routes are cut, but it looks really bad right now. And no service after 9 pm in a major city is absolutely crazy.
The amount of service they’ll cut is astonishing. How state leaders are potentially going to allow this to happen is absolutely maniacal. People do love being stuck in traffic I guess.
What would be cut + massive fare hikes:
Aug. 24: 20% service cut
- 32 bus routes eliminated
- 16 bus routes shortened
- Service reductions on 88 bus, Metro and Regional Rail lines
- End of all special service, such as Sports Express
September 2025: 21.5% fare increase
- Complete hiring freeze, including operators
- Base fare increased to $2.90
Beginning Jan. 1, 2026: Additional 25% service cuts
- 5 Regional Rail routes eliminated
- 18 additional bus routes eliminated
- Broad-Ridge Spur [B3] eliminated
- Routes 10 [T1] and 15 [G1] trolleys converted to buses
- A 9 p.m. curfew on all remaining Metro and Regional Rail services
Harrisburg hates Philly. They’re creaming to turn it further into Detroit.
