It appears to shorten pedestrian crossing paths which is sometimes a major reason for doing these redesigns. Drivers can’t be trusted and the less time someone is spending crossing an intersection, the better.

They just redid the northbound 9/103 bus stop and they want to do it over?

Certainly, but NYC has ignored the importance of pedestrian areas for too long, neglecting urban furniture and various amenities. Glad things are finally changing for the better.

The article was a bit unclear but did say this:
"Vincent Barone, a spokesman for the Transportation Department, declined to say why the work appeared to be delayed, or to provide a new timeline for the project.
“The Mamdani administration has been working to deliver bus lane and busway projects across the five boroughs,” Mr. Barone said in a statement, adding, “We will be starting work on 34th Street in the coming weeks.”
