It’s just a different reason to avoid it.
Soon it’ll be 40 years since the city and state first started the project to revitalize Times Square. A middle-aged Robert AM Stern was part of the design team back in the Dinkins administration. The entire area has been transformed, and so has the city. Back then Bryant Park was Needle Park.
I just finished reading this - it was fantastic!
1965 - New York Tribune Building and Civic Center wasteland
1970 - Pace has replaced the Tribune Building, 100 Gold Street has been replaced by a government building; Southbridge Towers and FDR ramp links are under construction
1973, with the final offramp added
Frame from Kojak c. 1973. The Verizon Building is under construction, with the Murry Bergtraum High School trailing behind
1974
1978; all buildings in the redevelopment are finished, but the Brooklyn Banks area is still empty parking space
Dun Building, Broadway and Duane Streets, 1965. Behind them, the big chungus Javits Federal Building is starting construction
7 years later, a very bizarre angle. The only survivor on the blockfront is a 25-foot wide 10-story building. Behind it is the Federal Building in its original state, with a 50-story windowless concrete core facing a huge empty lot. Behind that, a huge taxpayer, and the ridiculously long Clock tower Building.
At the 30 second mark there is a still of the old Brooklyn Vitagraph studio lot, including their smokestack that DeBlob allowed to be torn down.
interesting that they completely demolished the little tribune theater building before starting on tribune
also behind it you can see that weird temporary street they paved through the wasteland that barely lasted 5 years
And Westway before it fell apart.

Second photo has to be taken in Spring 1980, just months after the completion of the upgraded antenna on the North Tower. And the third shot has to be taken in 1983, as the Vista Hotel (3 WTC) is recently completed and it looks like the photographer intentionally have the foundation work or early above ground work for the World Financial Center just out of frame
Okay, based on research that wheatfield only lasted four months, from 1 May to 16 August 1982. So that shot is taken between then…but based on my skills with lighting and the area, I believe that shot was taken around late July/early August
Kid me used to stare at this picture with Willie Nelson’s City Of New Orleans playing and feel really sad
It’s a shame half of these pictures aren’t available online because the book is way too big for me to scan any pages
Which book?
WTC as seen from Williamsburg. Circa 1999. Some kid was taking matters into his own hands and cleaning up the waterfront.
Recalled poster for Spider-Man (2002). Look at what’s in the lens, that’s why it was recalled. And that teaser trailer. Also look at the perspective of the Chrysler Building…is Spidey climbing 175 Park??
Close to Central Park and a supertall with a lackluster copy and paste design…I see it. Fantastic poster
