I really like this building, esp. up close - But sometimes all I see is this:

Its the Hudson Yards tower that was dropped on its head as a young baby lowrise. Can you blame it though for not looking good? It has to stare at 35 Hudson all day who is the Zeus of the complex. 30 Hudson is just big bone thats all, but some like the phat nature of it.

It’s those columns.

The crown is turning out to be horrendous. Wish it was more like the renderings.

Will it be lit?

I think that this building is lame. The façade is beautiful, but it’s otherwise a boring 780’ box.

I agree RW.

The base is well done, but the rest of tower is poorly executed. The terraces look pretty tacky and like I said, the crown is turning out to be cheap as well.

It’s hard to standout when you’re next door to the masterpieces that are 35HY and 30HY.

I think this is the worst building appearance-wise of the complex, being boxier than even 50HY, but I like what it does (as well of the other buildings) in that it is anchored by 30HY almost perfectly. The more-straight side of the 30HY has this simple tower jutting out almost like an arm of god, and the sloped side is anchored by the other towers.

Leave it to Kohn Pedersen Fox to ruin a tower by neglecting the design at the top. First 45E22nd, then 50West, now 55HY.

This is embarrassing! How hard was it to specify matte black louvers for the parapet on this building? And black cladding for the columns on the balconies? How hard would it have been to build a taller parapet on 22nd Street and West Street?

SMH…

While HY is an undeniably impressive undertaking, it still falls well short of other clusters in major alpha cities (same with WTC). The fact that Shanghai World Financial is KPF as well says it all.

For sure those 3 Shanghai towers are all show-stoppers, but you are selling HY a bit short…It will have The Vessel, The Shed, and 1st rate shopping/dining and The Highline wraps all around it. Plus there are a few huge buildings that aren’t even built yet…So taken as whole, as one “complex”, HY is pretty special.

Also, I remember when Jin Mao was built, it was by itself for maybe 7-8 years (?). It looked pretty lonely.

Not to mention all the amazing architecture surrounding it as well as the Highline. China might have some beautiful towers but 90% of their cities are incredibly ugly.

I very much agree. Shanghai tower is amazing, but Shanghai itself looks disgusting and not taken care of.
