I didn’t realize it earlier, but this is the weirdest shaped hotel building because of the lot assemblage. It has a wide mass with a cantilever on the 48th st side, but the 47th st side has a narrow attachment with a lot of setbacks.
There was an article in the Times about this a few years ago. It’s cheaper to build straight up than to do setbacks.
It’s a shame that Extell couldn’t buy the adjacent sites on 47th St. They are filthy and disgusting. Presumably, the putzes who own them refused to sell.
It’s ridiculous that this street, along with Antwerp, is the biggest diamond center in the world, and yet it looks like a third-world, dilapidated PoS.
Lot line windows next door in peril -
I’ve always liked the building to the left of this.
I love that building in the front with all the setbacks.
I’ve looked at the Midtown EarthCam so many times and never realized this was so prominently visible on it. Looks like they are working on the last bulkhead floors now, also seems like cladding is starting near the bottom from this ESB angle.
