Does anyone know if the lighting at the top of these two buildings will ever be turned on again?

Has anyone seen any crown lighting on 1 or 2 MW in 2024? As awesome as these recent pics have been, it seems like most newer skyscrapers are all dealing with lighting issues

Nope. Been dead all year. Just look at the ESB Live Cam at night. Such a shame especially since it took forever for 1 MW’s lights to be turned on and 2 MW’s were on for only a short while before going dark for good.

Nighttime lighting is the new trees in high places: vaporware. Seriously developers/owners should just stop asking for it from architecture firms if they have no intention of maintenance. There’s sometime this pushback of opinion of not wanting NYC to look like some Asian city with all the lights, but frankly we couldn’t achieve that if we tried.

Some of the crown lights for 2 Manhattan West are on as of tonight

Yup, they’re on. Perhaps there is testing going on and the lighting will hopefully be restored at some point.

Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

Between the World Trade Center, Central Park tower, and this, I just wonder why the lighting engineers can produce such a lousy product in some of the most expensive and high profile projects of their kind in the country. In most industries that would be career ending.

So, true. There does seem to be a crisis of competence in the Architectural Lighting field.

I am not sure if the main issue is with the ‘design’ or ‘construction’ of these lighting systems: maybe both…

I will leave this link for those who wsh to explore this interesting observation by BPC.

Construction workers at 2 Manhattan West are being accused of being Peeping Toms.

  1. That is indeed creepy behavior
  2. consider this is a country where Trump has been elected to our highest government office twice despite his documented misogyny and maybe the reason for that is because sort of behavior is widespread and accepted (but at the same time no, not everyone is a creep)
  3. Use the blinds. Seriously. You live in a highrise. Neighboring buildings are not going anywhere and will always be able to see you. If you want your privacy, that’s the only way to know 100% you’ve got it,

The NY Ct. Of Appeals refused to find that peeping toms violate privacy law in tort. The case involved an artist/photographer taking pictures into a glass building across the street in Tribeca and using blown up versions in a gallery exhibit. The exhibit images did not display any nudity but permission was not obtained from the people displayed and they didn’t find out about it until the gallery show went up. The state legislature needs to take some action IMHO.

Drones are going to make that problem much, much worse
