According to @nycurbanism on Instagram, they spent $30,000 on flex tape. So that’s why they’re loosing money lol

How long does it freaking take to fix this issue? They’ve known about this for about a year…but who are we kidding? The PA is a joke. It’ll never open again. Mark my words.

The Calatrava Curse compounded by the ineptitude of the PA… shudder at the thought.

“ The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has spent at least $50,000 sealing the retractable skylight with water-resistant tape after it sprung a leak in 2018, according to a person familiar with the skylight’s operation.

A spokesman for the public agency declined to confirm or deny that figure. But he said that the agency expects to spend a further $200,000 sealing the skylight with a waterproof membrane. That work is under way.”

“ The Port Authority spokesman said Thursday that the agency is conducting an engineering analysis with a view to repairing the skylight. “While that analysis is ongoing, we are taking prudent steps to better protect the skylight with a more durable barrier system,” he said.”

“ Elysium Health is making the leap to brick-and-mortar.

The digitally native health-and-wellness brand will open its first physical store this summer, at Westfield World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.

Elysium Health, a life sciences company that develops health products based on advancements in scientific research, launched online in 2015. Its upcoming store will feature the brand’s cellular health supplement Basis, its biological age test Index and new products scheduled to be released in 2020. It will also offer interactive and educational experiences.”

Nice to see more stores opening at the Oculus.

“ As commuters trudged across the soccer field-sized concourse between the NYC subway and PATH trains, the lights illuminating the white rib cage-like Oculus structure shifted from bright white to red, white and blue in tribute to Veterans Day.

Installing 13,000 energy efficient light emitting diodes started 18 months ago and was completed in the last week to 10 days, said Rick Cotton, the Port Authority’s executive director. The $7 million lighting replacement was part of a larger project on the World Trade Center campus, which started at the Oculus, he said.

“What a wonderful coincidence it (was finished) just before Veteran’s Day,” Cotton said. “This inaugurates a new tradition celebrating Veterans Day.”

“ The new lights are part of the Port Authority’s “clean dozen” initiatives that follow the agency’s decisions to follow the Paris Climate accords, Cotton said. Energy savings of 6.4 million kilowatts from the new lighting is expected to be about $1 million annually, meaning it will pay for itself in less than 10 years, he said.”

“A celebration at Oculus Plaza at the World Trade Center on Friday marked the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s 100th anniversary.

The centennial was marked by the dedication of a plaque and a time capsule which was packed with notable items from the past century.”

“The capsule includes tokens, old suspension cables from the George Washington Bridge and remnants of steel from the Twin Towers.

It will be placed at the World Trade Center site and remain sealed for the next 100 years.”

The most interesting and beautiful structure NYC has constructed in a long time… until you get up close. Then it’s like, “what the hell happened here?”

If you look closely, the finishes on the Guggenheim are pretty cheap too. FLW was unhappy with the details. But nobody really cares. It’s not nearly as cheap-looking up close as the Oculus, though. I blame the PABT’s stinginess and incompetence, and the notoriously high construction costs in NYC (though Calatrava is probably somewhat to blame too–while I adore his work as giant sculptures, it nearly always has some massive technical problem).

I took this a few weeks ago. The paint is falling off in a lot of places already.
