I agree this is better than most bare walls both because of the middle windows and the curved corners. This is not a terrible building. But the finish on the bare concrete walls could be so much better. It diminishes the otherwise classy design. Rather than being just a good building it could have been a great one.
I like this design better than 220 CPS even though 220 did a (better) job covering up the South elevation shear wall. Compared to what we feared with some early renders this is a gift
I’m with @chused on this. The exposed core doesn’t bother me since it’s well integrated into the overall design. And the fact that it looks like a gigantic I-beam is pretty cool in itself – a witty pomo touch worthy of Philip Johnson.
It’s just that the concrete is a bit rough looking, which jars somewhat with all that smooth, curved glass. Add some cladding – ideally metal (to enhance the I-beam effect) – and I think it’s a potential stunner.
One Liberty Plaza all clad in black looks a bit ominous in that photo next to all those gleaming new glass towers: to me, and probably only me, that building evokes the image of Darth Vader. The exposed concrete on 125 Greenwich was in fact artfully detailed; but yes, I see the above mentioned points, any type of cladding would have been better. One can only wonder if that we a matter of VE, and therefore completely out of the design architects control.
Well looking imposing and with forboding, that was supposed to be part of a brutalist’s building charm, as it were.
One Liberty also is not the greatest of buildings, especially when compared to the Mies designed Seagram Building uptown at 375 Park and 52nd Street, also with a black facade. That is deservedly a historically designated classic.
I see it just as a giant tombstone for something better, but that’s just the way I see it
Yeah, having replaced the Singer Building doesn’t do it any favors in my book. That it’s outclassed (IMHO) by another black-clad building nearby – 140 Broadway – doesn’t help its cause either.
I agree. I love 140 Broadway but hate 1 Liberty.
Just so I don’t go too far off topic, I think this one is pretty attractive. The exposed concrete gives me bad vibes but the smooth glass cladding makes up for it.
Outclassed in style sure but 1 liberty has those chunky floor plates always attractive to financial and law tenants. Both 1 liberty and 140 bway suffer from low ceilings and older internal mechanisms typical of buildings of their generation.
Looks so good that a person could be forgiven for assuming Vinoly collaborated with Richard Rogers and Fumihiko Maki to synch up the neighborhood aesthetic. I actually like this one best of the three. Who needs a Pritzker?
I didn’t see this one coming
“The 1,396-foot-tall, 88-story skyscraper, designed by Rafael Viñoly, topped out in March.”
That is some very old info they are going with! Lol.
TBH, had they kept it at that height it would be drawing more interest and positive attention.
Maybe they would have better sales.
JC is referring to how Real Deal mixed this up with vinoly’s other project 432 Park Ave. I saw it but I’m so used to low standards in journalism that I didn’t bother to mention it.
This one was slated for 1200+ feet at one point but never the height of 432 park ave
It was supposed to be 1,450-ish! But was massively reduced
