NEW YORK | Second Avenue Subway

I know things can change with an election but it’s nice to at least have support for big projects like this. It would be preferable to extend to the Bronx. But this westward extension is pretty much an excellent second choice. It will actually allow more connectivity to upper Manhattan and lines originating in the Bronx as well.

IMO, the Bronx doesn’t need another N/S line, they need a cross town service much more.

And that can be done some what easily by extending the concours line.

What’s confusing is how they reduced the expected size of the 125th/Park subway station - did they do so by getting rid of escalators, as the below diagram suggests?

What most people don’t seem to get is the project is being built in phases. The next phase is to go to Harlem which makes the most sense since some tunnel portions are already there. Later phases will bring the route to downtown. It’s not like the downtown phases are being cancelled which the headline of this article makes it seem like the Phase 2 portion of this project is denying people of the downtown portion.

Older proposed route map showing phases.

It’s not cancelled; it’s just shunted to the 22nd century lol.

I’m torn on the reporting because I do like that they are dedicating some thought into a 125th street crosstown. We may not get the political desire/capital for that again in decades so I’m happy that it’s considered. It’s just sad that the MTA and politicians are so grossly incompetent that they can’t do it all. The 125th crosstown should be Phase 5 in an idealized world, not something that pushes Phases 3 and 4 off for a century.

The cancellation of congestion pricing pushes back the timing of the Second Avenue Subway extension to the 22nd Century?

A dark day for transit advocates :frowning:

Can we have Gov. Cuomo back? Hochul is Trump-level awful. At best, she’s delaying everything. At worst, she’s cancelling everything. I’d like to ride a full-length SAS before I die, please. We need congestion pricing and a new governor.

I don’t think we can get Andrew back. Kathy was doing ok until recently.

She’s such an embarrassment. Will this pay for 3 yards of subway?

While she’s scrummaging around for extra cash maybe she’ll find her backbone and actually reinstate congestion pricing.

She’s an invertebrate, so what you have suggested is biologically impossible.

Apparently she got the money from the existing infrastructure fund.

That and no money.
