He’s doing a lot of good things.
I keep thinking about so many other worthy projects that need trains/fixing WAY more than the second ave subway line. Wanted to get your ideas about what other projects you think should take precedence.
I’ll go first: As a NY’r raised on Staten Island, I’d say that a subway line & tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island is EXTREMELY needed. SI is truly the forgotten Borough when it comes to public transportation. Commuting from the southernmost areas of SI to Manhattan is a nightmare. Connect the R from Bay Ridge to the SIR.
The Brooklyn-Staten Island subway tunnel would be the most expensive infrastructure project in world history and may require the minting of a special denomination.
It would still be a nightmare even if they built this tunnel. SI Mall is further from Downtown than Jamaica is in Queens and that isn’t even that far south in SI.
Not to mention the R is the slowest train in the existence of the universe you might as well swim to Manhattan than take the R all the way.

This statement can’t get any more true.
If any train line is to be built to SI, the R isn’t the one to run on it.
Maybe after the Second Avenue Subway is extended to lower Manhattan (centuries from now) they can hire a consultant to identify whether it’s worth it to study possible extensions further south to Staten Island.
This will get built when pigs learn to fly and we achieve world peace.
Hahahaha. Amazing replies. Damn shame about SI. Does anyone have suggestions of transit projects deserving of funding more than second ave subway?
N extension to LaGuardia but the nimbys voted it down.
Maybe anything that connects the Bronx to Queens Brooklyn and SI. A North South connection is badly needed.
Yeah, number one has to be the Interborough Express. I would happily see funds for the Second Ave Subway diverted to making the Interborough fully grade separated and extending it into the Bronx as originally intended.
Another great use of funds would be the pedestrianization of Broadway, 42nd, Park, and other major thoroughfares. Doing a “big dig” project to move the FDR underground and turn the riverfront into a pedestrian esplanade would be my dream (although that would likely cost more than the whole Second Ave subway).
Edit -
Other worthwhile projects would include:
- Extension of “6” train to Co-Op City. Not happening since Co-Op City is expected to get a Metro North station in time for its centennial anniversary in 2068. Unfortunately the Metro-North station is at the very south end of the complex and is very far away from where most folks live.
- Crosstown subway in the Bronx (perhaps along Fordham Road or Tremont Avenue).
- Extension of “3” train in Brooklyn to Gateway Center and possibly to Starrett City.
- Utica Avenue subway line (possibly as an extension of “4” train.
Anyway, these are all nice to think about, but none of it will ever happen.
Naaaah. Take the boat.
Utica Ave does keep coming up and really should happen.
There’s actually a flying pig at the 86th & Lex subway station.
High on the list of MTA projects that should happen next? I think they’ve both been mentioned but:
- Extend 2nd Ave subway from East 125th to the west side
- Interborough Express (Brooklyn-Queens light rail)
On the second one, latest update:
