It’s about 96% leased with this newest leasing expansion.
impressive. Hope this motivates them to complete the rest of the 2 missing pieces
The antenna looks better than the WTC
shoutout kenya for making the spire nice
Notably, these two towers only look like 1WTC from one angle – Northeast Asia Trade Tower’s top floor is triangular in shape, and Torre de Cristal’s is oblong, more similar to 45 East 22nd.
Aesthetically, Britam Tower’s spire treatment would have fit perfectly on 1WTC – it almost looks like a simplified descendant of Child’s original lattice spire. But being twice the Nairobi spire’s height, I’m guessing the engineering challenges would still have been substantial.
If they’re not going to decorate the spire, they should at the very least do something with the communication rings. They look unfinished.
They won’t, and they can’t. How many times does this need to be repeated, I know on this site a video showing the wind test is on here twice. With the cladding, the spire shook and rattled, making the cladding impossible
I know, I’ve seen the videos. That particular cladding yes, but have they considered trying something different? Something less that doesn’t completely cover what’s underneath?
They haven’t, despite criticism and urging to do so from Childs and SOM.
They could have at least did some modifications to the spire… the base is goofy.
They can and should do what they did in Kuala Lampur, over 600m in the sky.
These holes prevent wind resistance from building up. But Durst didn’t even want to explore cost effective ways to at least tweak the stripped spire they went with, let alone doing something like this. All to save $20 million, per Douglas Durst’s own words. Sad.
Oh trust me, even when I was typing that reply I was thinking of that same exact concept. Durst, if you want some positivity towards your iconic tower…do this NOW
The thing is they just don’t care. The wind may have initially been the reason for the scrapped mast but the reason it’s not there right now is not a matter of physics but money and care. As shown with Merdeka, it’s more than possible. There’s even an observation level in that spire.
I thought I could recall hearing that radio interference was another reason in the spire being scrapped? I’m not sure how valid that is, but with the sheer density of broadcasting equipment mounted to the spire, the cladding may have posed a challenge.
Im sure a holed design like in merdeka would put that argument to rest
the beacon appears to be once again working in a low intensity strobe this evening. Can be seen from multiple angles as opposed to just one axis. Maybe they’re really working on fixing it…
the spire is red and the base is red so maybe there is a theme for tonight, Mother’s day?
took me awhile to time this screen grab. It’s flashing once every 3-4 seconds or so, compared to how it once was, one rotation every 20 seconds. Here it is, and for those wondering, yes, this is the beacon light and not the FAA warning light which is further above:
hmmm, still doesnt seem to be working to the East.
Apparently previously occupied space on the 89th and 90th floors have now been opened up to be leased by companies
The strobe has been there for a while now. It’s not as awesome as a rotating beacon though.
