NEW YORK | Moynihan Station (Farley Post Office Conversion)

Luckily I had a meeting near port authority at the end of the day so I took the bus home. But this kind of stuff is just going to keep happening until there’s a system overhaul. Were you one of the unlucky souls in penn tonight?

Thankfully not. Although in the past, it has happened. When I visit clients in the city, I usually drive. Which is not much better as sometimes, it takes me two hours to go from NJ (Elizabeth area) to Queens. The trip back is the worst. On mutiple occasions, it has taken me an hour if not more to go from JFK to Staten Island, and than an hour to cross Staten Island into NJ (Goethals). The traffic is just as bad.

Rail, and especially some highways, need overhauls. I dread the BQE, absolutely dread it. Its the definition of a parking lot some days, and when you see the road signs that say "gridlock alert "… they mean it. :frowning:

On a side note, Manhattan traffic is bad, but I’m convinced that Brooklyn has the worst traffic out of all the boroughs.

Gee, it would be nice if there were a second NJ Transit tunnel to Jersey. Even better if the feds paid for almost all of it. Would be fantastic if the terminal were deep under the heart of Manhattan, integrated with subway and PATH. Oh, wait…

Chris Christie did more damage to the region than probably any other individual in modern history. Even OBL on 9-11 arguably did not do as much long-term damage. It will probably take at least 15 years to get a new tunnel, and it will be an Amtrak tunnel, so NJT will still have capacity issues.

I hadn’t realized that the office conversion by Vornado was well along. Lots of neat information and renderings on their site. I hope one big, lucky tenant takes it. Amazon?

Also, not new, but I love this fly-through, especially for the Moinihan/Farley portion:

Cant wait to see what happens to all the surrounding run down buildings when this is finished; lots of room for improvement!

There’s such a renaissance going on around there and it’s going to be amazing to see this neighborhood in full swing, centered on a transportation hub. There are so many small, dilapidated buildings that no one would shed a tear for, so plenty more opportunities to put together large lots. I gotta say though, I do hope the old Bickford’s building survives.

Thanks for putting all the info/renders here @JB_Slope. Moynihan will look incredible when it’s done. Now that’s how you revive and reuse a NYC landmark. It’s nice to have a “new” addition to this area that isn’t made of glass. Can’t wait to walk around this when it’s done

If there’s really no chance of a full MSG redevelopment, I would suggest they build out a rectangular reskinning with a buffer layer of glazing to replace the gross facade currently in place. Even just that could work wonders.

I’ve seen renderings for that, I think in Cuomo’s half-measure presentations. I prefer this idea, however unlikely:

Imagine walking from Moynihan Train Hall to Manhattan West, to the western edge of Hudson Yards, then down to the Whitney without once having to cross a street or encounter a car.
