People dressed so formally back then. The average person did not have a lot of clothing.

I believe it had to do with pride of self. Not wanting to go out in public unless you look your best and look successful. I remember growing up in the 50’s and 60’s my mother would not leave the house unless she was well dressed and coiffed. Even to the grocery store or visit my grandmother. A different time.

I was just in Moynihan Train Hall a few days ago. It’s cool to see what it looked like way back then as compared to today.
