It never ceases to amaze me how much has been built in so little time. Despite the fact that I know it isn’t, that skyline looks so, empty…at least compared to today.
I agree, now the skyscrapers that were once the dominant ones in the city look like little kids ![]()
Totally early 1980s
This is right Thomas 1982 the recordings were made. ![]()
From that decade (1980s)I have many pictures in my collection not only about New York.

Does anyone know what those black strips/blotches on 90 West’s copper roof are? My first instinct is to assume it’s replacement copper or something, but it seems like almost every copper roof on the skyline in the 60s-80s went through this phase and it just lingered.
I have a question about these two old renderings of the West Street Building and an old photo?
When were the four corner towers removed? it must have been around the end of the 40s or beginning of the 50s.
I’ve seen some pictures of it just before and after the end of WW2 where the turrets are all still there.
This picture is dated 3/3/1946 and the southern turrets are already removed
Here towards the end of 1946, apparently around the time the Singer Building cupola renovation was underway, the rest are already gone
Modern day comparison
So the northern 2 were destroyed in 1946, with the southern 2 being left ambiguous as either 1945 or 1946
