The current T6 renderings are pretty “meh” compared to the original with the swooping roof but it’s alright. I’m still excited about T6 and T1 since they’re the most interesting parts of the project and thankfully have not been completely butchered.
I recall hearing a few months ago that they’re still negotiating T6’s financial close, and that it’s expected by year end. Hoping they’re staying on-target, as this is the last major terminal project that has yet to break ground.
As for T4, it would certainly be a shame if Delta decides against the full Concourse A build-out. Oh well, maybe in the next redevelopment!
I managed to find an image on Google Maps that shows the current status of the T8 “Expansion”. It’s incredibly disappointing as expected, comprising mostly really really long windowless piers to jetbridges and a small seating area, and is basically finished with the exception of the apron markings. No construction vehicles are even present which further indicates things are wrapping up.
Such a wasted opportunity. And to think we could have had the finished T8 instead…
Speaking of, the best feature of the expansion might not even be ready right away. Someone commenting on this article claims the new lounges won’t be ready until early next year, despite BA’s move being just weeks away: British Airways to start move to JFK’s Terminal 8 on November 17 – Business Traveller
Does anyone know if BA would be able to bring their A380s to JFK with this “expansion.” Im not optimistic.
These do not look like they are ideal gates for the A380. There is only one jetbridge per area. Look at the A380 area at T4 and its got like 3. Loading and unloading an A380 here will be a painfully slow and inefficent process.
Yea just what I thought, disappointing.
Anyone have a TXF subscription? They published an article a few days ago stating that T6 is nearing its financial close, however it’s behind a paywall. JFK Terminal 6 nearing financial close - TXF
Speaking of Terminal 6, a rating assignment from Moody’s states the initial opening has been pushed to 2026, with full completion in 2028. Research: Rating Action: Moody's assigns first time Baa3 ratings to JFK Millennium Partners, LLC senior secured obligations, outlook stable - Moody's
Hopefully with all this buzz about the financial backing of the project, we can expect an announcement of financial close by year end, and perhaps with a bit of luck, a groundbreaking in Q1/Q2 2023?
Called it! T6 has reached financial close: Governor Hochul Announces Construction of a $4.2 Billion New Terminal 6 at JFK Will Begin Early Next Year as Final Pieces of the Project Are in Place | Governor Kathy Hochul
Construction is set to begin “early next year” at a cost that has gone up to $4.2 billion. Better late than never!
This is excellent news. Terminal 6 and Terminal 1 are probably the best parts of the JFK renovation. Terminal 8’s absolutely pathetic and Terminal 4’s expansion was severely neutered and is also disappointing.
I do wonder if they’ll publish new refined renderings closer to the construction start similar to how Terminal 1 received new renderings when construction started.
Indeed, I’d especially like to see some interior shots. They say it can support up to three lounges, I’m curious to see how that will work.
As for T8, their short-sighted expansion was only built for BA and Iberia. Now CZ, RAM and JAL are all set to join them as well, and they may not even be the last (think Alaska or Aer Lingus). Perhaps we’ll get a “phase 2” featuring the full build out!
Another interesting tidbit hidden in the announcement is that Lufthansa Group (and I’m assuming other Star Alliance members) will be moving into the new T6 from their current home in T1
Very interesting indeed. I was under the impression that T1 was to become the Star Alliance terminal, but it seems that’s not the case. Sounds like we’re guaranteed a Lufthansa lounge, maybe we’ll get a JetBlue transatlantic lounge as well?
Likewise, you would think that any additional Oneworld that couldn’t fit in the paltry expansion of 8 would want to be in T6 with the (current) partnership between American and Jetblue and their post-security bus connection…but I digress
FAA just OK’d the new Terminal 6.
Sounds like O’Hare’s Global Terminal is set to get approved on Monday as well. Separate project, I know, but that’s an exciting development in my opinion.
