The markets and people are reacting the way they are because of the uncertainty which a virus like this would cause. Government officials downplayed the threat when it first was being reported even blaming the media for mass hysteria and now are reacting with these extreme measures after downplaying the threat.
It not shocking that people are reacting the way they are.
Exactly. I donât understand what you guys mean by âmediaâ and the reporting they do. They have been extensively reporting what is happening abroad because whatâs happening in China and in Europe is what will happen to the US if we donât take proactive measurements! No one has been cured, there isnât a cure! Symptoms of those with the virus have simply subsided or are no longer contagious, they were not cured. These measures of social distancing, closing of stores and guidelines for ordinary citizens that this âmediaâ is reporting are all from government sources like the CDC! People are panicking because of the mixed messages of our government, and sure, the headlines can be sensational or extra, but read the substance and not the headlines.
Save these for a discussion elsewhere on the forum.
I think that video is a good example of a problem. It paints of picture of the pandemic being out of control, just to make Trump look like a doofus (we already know that he is) Meanwhile cities like San Francisco have shelter in place orders and over here the Tri State is being heavy handed on combatting spread. But MSNBC wants us to think its out of control for some mysterious reason⌠not good for the economy. Not good for the country!
But I digress. Does anyone know if 50 HY and the Spiral are still going?
Honestly all politicians are doofuses, all of them lie and never always promise what they say theyâll do. Thatâs also why I stay away from politics, they all have pros and cons
Yesterday they were. Unions cannot cancel work unless the owners release them from their contract (which they wonât) or if DOB issues a moratorium. DOB has been asked to provide 24-48 hour notice of a moratorium, so at this point construction will last thru the week. Who knows about next week, but honestly I think itâll probably keep going, maybe slowed down a bit.
Seems like the industry has a grip on local government, plus the non-union workers are very vulnerable if they stop work, since many are undocumented and canât collect government benefits. Construction specifically wouldnât be halted, I think. It would only be a shelter-in-place kinda thing.
Iâm sorry - Many of you are totally wrong about the media trying to make this worse than it is. This is an extremely serious worldwide crisis and lack of social distancing WILL 100% lead to overburdened hospitals and horrible health outcomes with much suffering and needless deaths. I work in procurement for NYC gov and can tell you the situation in NYC hospitals is getting bad, even from being removed from the frontline as I amâŚensuring sufficient goods such as PPE, gowns, masks, ventilators, testing swabs, etc are now extreme challenges - This is still the 1st inning. Just b/c you are healthy and young there may be a very, very small chance you end up on a ventilator, you can easily spread this. Discipline yourself now so others donât have and discipline yourself now so you donât harm others. You MUST take this seriously. Of course the economy is fucked in the short term. Letâs do the right thing so itâs less fucked in the long term.
Before a couple days ago, I was under the impression that the highest-ranked hospital systems in the country and the largest city in the country would have the common sense to have at least a few daysâ worth of masks and gloves stockpiled, because it would be insanely stupid not to. Now they come begging on television for donations mere days into the big wave of patients, as if they havenât had MONTHS of notice to be stockpiling these BASIC NECESSITIES of running a clinic. Why werenât they collecting these things back this whole winter? In fact, they shouldnât have needed notice at allâ this has proven is that if we had an extremely potent disease, or even, god forbid, some sort of bioterrorist-made toxin coming our way we would all already be dead.
Before I believed it was overblown because I had some basic confidence in the competency of our government. So far from being impressed with their âserious responseâ, I now get the sense that theyâre grossly incompetent.
They can cry foul about panic buying all they want, but they had plenty of time to get ahead of that wave. In fact, maybe if the media hadnât gone around saying thereâs a â4% death rateâ and instead focused on the crux of this, which is public responsibility for the vulnerable folks around us, people wouldnât have done all the hoarding.
I by no means believe that this virus is to be trivialized. we can see the danger from other countries which have gotten pummeled. But I also see the media and the government picking the wrong battles and creating a crisis much worse than it needs to be. Basic logic and common sense has been draining from our society for decades now, this is calling out everyoneâs bluffs, the dems and conservatives, government and private sector. Itâs a total failure of a system, not a demonstration of itâs effectiveness
I really havenât seen anything thatâs so serious about this virus. The symptoms are similar to the flu, how bad can that be? No matter what if I get it, I donât care if I goâŚbut I bet Iâd be fine in a few days like most people
There is no risk to anyone except those with severe health conditions. But there are actually a lot of people with health conditions in the world, probably more than you think. Data from Italy shows 99% of deaths are people with severe pre-existing conditions, but even those people alone have overwhelmed their system.
So we have to take steps to protect the vulnerable, and since most people donât know how to cover their cough or wash their hands, the only way to stop spread is all the social distancing thats all over the internet and TV these days.
@bpc âThere is no risk to anyone except those with severe health conditions.â That is just not factually correct. And yes monumental government failures all around, but in all due respect, you are making some assumptions as if they were foregone conclusions 30 days ago.
Anecdotal reddit quotes from Italy arenât the same as facts.
Iâm not factually correct? Show me proof of substantial quantities of healthy people under 80 dying from this. Itâs not an assumption, itâs a literal fact of this illness.
This is exactly what I was talking about with âfactsâ being thrown around. It just keeps spreading and specific things become untrue as told from source to another, thatâs why Iâm not paying a lot of attention to media
