Are there any other sites on 57th street that could conceivably yield another supertall? I know there was some chatter about the Vornado Rizzoli bookstore site and another site owned by a Turkish company, but I’m not sure if either of those have the air rights to build a supertall. Anyone with more knowledge of NY real estate care to chime in?
Extell’s 123 West 57th could turn into something huge. The initial diagrams put it at above 700ft. Obviously with 225 still finishing up, this one likely won’t start for several years.
Relatively limited air rights at 123 West 57th Street — even with Extell’s FAR leftovers — mean that any new tower is unlikely to achieve stratospheric heights. The massing diagrams obtained by YIMBY show a height of 59 floors and 761 feet, though it’s possible that re-configuring the envelope and allowing for additional air rights could boost the tower to the 1,000-foot level.
If Extell can amass over 300,000 square feet of air rights, the potential is there for something that alters the neighborhood skyline. 111 West 57th Street’s early plans could also be a good comparison, as that building initially started out at a size similar to the current massing diagrams, in plans created by CetraRuddy and revealed by YIMBY back in 2012.

I remember being in Central Park as a teenager and seeing the scale and height of One57 all by itself. What a crazy decade!

Citicorp and 53W53 make a cute couple in that shot!
vacant and apparently under renovation. steel stairs being removed from the rear. This stretch of 57th is garbage, vacant lots, empty stores and more than a few pretty ugly building left while the good ones have been demolished or will be.
I agree. 57th is nothing special.
Wow, fantastic photo. I just need to photoshop out the scaffold/cranes and photoshop in the completed crowns of a few of those buildings: and I got a screensaver photo for Architecture fans everywhere.
Remember when this giant was proposed back in 2017? Imagine if it was approved. PHOTO CREDIT to Baronson
