I agree. This is a great standalone tower that would be a trophy building in other cities but now its being relegated to a campus building.
It does look like they’re removing the granite tiles one by one manually, currently focusing on a specific kind of them. At least it’ll find a use elsewhere, in some shape.
This is a travesty. Will miss the original.
Well, that’s a bit harsh.
I do agree we getting an ‘aesthetic downgrade’ with this new renovation.
I find the new top-to-bottom facade a bit sterile looking: but not bad. To offer a couple of Quotes I now give you NYguy and Cass Gilbert.
Quote - “Better daylight and visibility for the employees, but also a tower that fits in better with it’s surroundings.” NYguy (From the SkyscraperPage Forum)
Quote - “A skyscraper is a machine that makes the land pay.” Cass Gilbert
Post modern towers just dont happen anymore, and Childs gave a very late testament to that.
The degree of detail to which the granite is sliced and placed, the intakes, the blinds of the windows, all work very well together, unlike in many buildings of the genre that would “over detail” and end up messy for the most part. Yet this was a very elegant and charming tower.
It follows it’s own design topology and that extends to the massing, and recladding it with no homage of the previous patterns and just taking apart one of the corners throws it all away.
A city where crass usually wins.
The construction elevator’s rising and has reached the top of the tower’s podium. I see they also have put in the supports all the way to the top where the elevator will rise to.
i dont hate it.
not really a fan of the postmodern style.
Agreed. While it is one of the better examples of PoMo, it, like many others, doesn’t age well. If the new upgrade is executed well and with similar materials to 270, it might end up being really nice.
it’ll be interesting to see if the crown gets a similar lighting treatment, or if it will interact with 270 in any way
I will miss the old facade but I get that it doesn’t ‘go’ with the new building.
The renovation is well-underway with YIMBY providing photos of the ongoing facade removal.
both can be true
banks shouldn’t be allowed to extort us commoners
companies should be allowed to make a lot of money
shocking, i know
That’s a dull architectural decision, but it’ll maximize sunlight and is a part of an overall corporate campus plan with even more to come in the future.
Dimon is not throwing around money “he has”, as he answers to a board of directors with plenty of folks being involved in such projects.
This forum needs to go back to discussing buildings with the occasional aside. What we’re getting now is the reverse.
ummmm anyways do we think the crown would have the same treatment as 270 ? i see some vertical LED strips but i wonder if theyre color changing
