I’m with you - This is probably my favorite PoMo in NY. We didn’t need more glass.
Too shiny. Its on the Vanderbilt corridor, id rather see it demolished and turned into a new iconic tower like Union Carbide.
Completely agree, leave the exterior as is, it was already an iconic tower and were already have too many glass towers.
Yah JP Morgan is clearly going for a unified corporate campus type vibe with this
While I get the appeal of the reclad and JP wanting a uniform look with 270, the existing building is quite handsome as it is and it’s a shame that it’s being completely changed. If anything it could have done with a refresh of some elements ( the base, the lantern, perhaps the framing of the windows). At this rate the reclad is such a departure from the original structure that I would have just preferred it to be redeveloped into a completely new building.
That Post headline referring to 383 as “drab” just further reinforces what we already knew: no one at the publication has any taste. If anything, 270 could be considered drab by comparison, not the other way around.
Anyway, this renovation sucks but at least they aren’t demolishing it like Union Carbide. If there’s a positive to take from it, maybe the lantern will get the full LED treatment, so the lighting can be coordinated between the two towers.
Also it’s kind of insulting when David Childs basically just passed away.
now imagine they close the street off between this and 270 to create a large pedestrian plaza
Do you mean having an array of LEDs instead of the LED throwing (can’t think of the better term) the way the ESB has? Would that work with what appears to be semi translucent glass panels?
Well, you wouldn’t want him to see it, would’ya
I mean basically a full “video-style” array like the one at 270, which could be animated in coordination with the 270 light show. Not sure what the actual term is, nor how feasible it would be to do as part of a renovation. Just looking for a silver lining.
lol. True
I guess we were lucky reclads weren’t undertaken often in the 60s/70s or who know what many of nyc’s current landmarks would look like!
Wow. This building is old enough to be renovated. I remember when it was built.
Same here. ![]()
Looks like they are wasting no time!
How unfortunate. All this beautiful granite at least better be recycled somehow…
