NEW YORK | 229 Lexington Ave | FT | 14 FLOORS

Revealed: 229 Lexington Avenue

BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON OCTOBER 27TH 2014

On the eastern side of Lexington Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets, two older low-rise buildings spanning 227-229 Lexington Avenue are currently awaiting demolition to make way for a new residential development. And now, YIMBY has the first renderings of the project, which was designed by C3D Architecture.

Albert Shirian of the NY Lions Group is the developer, and the new structure will stand 14 stories tall. With only 40 units, the building will be of a smaller scale than typical new developments in the neighborhood; that list includes 160 Madison Avenue and the soon-to-rise 172 Madison Avenue, both located just two blocks to the west.

229 Lexington Avenue will certainly employ a more contextual approach than 160 Madison, blending into the existing street-wall with its pre-war neighbors. An open glassy exterior dominated by huge windows will also be laced with “metal antique bronze finish frames,” adding a metallic touch that complements the surrounding brick vernacular.

Demolition filings for the existing low-rises were approved in September, though new building permits for their replacement have not yet been filed. Besides the apartments, 229 Lexington will also include ground-floor retail, mitigating the loss of the previous structures.

Eh. I used to live a block away. This had been up since last year.

In the Google streetview from June 2016, rebar is not visible above the fence. So it must have gone in during the past 10 months.
