The first renderings are up for a new hotel at 220 West 41st Street, which has also risen well above ground level in recent months; Palmetto Hospitality is the building’s developer, and Helpern is the architect of record.

While the on-site image is slightly blurry, Helpern’s website has a clearer version, as well as additional reveals for the tower’s interiors. The overall product looks to be somewhat nicer than typical new hotels in Midtown, but the exterior’s setback from the street poses a definite aesthetic problem.

The site’s neighbors

Permits indicate that 220 West 41st Street will soon stand 30 stories tall, with a rooftop 298 feet above street level. Additional bulkheads will push the final height to 332 feet, and on the inside, the building will have 300 rooms.

Besides the setback, the appearance of 220 West 41st Street should be rather bland; the ground-floor offers a slight attempt at contextuality, but the high-rise portion will be standard hotel fare. Ribbed protrusions extend from the structure at several intervals, but the attempt at dynamism seems awkward.

Looking up

With the David Nederlander theater located next-door and the New York Times Tower situated down the block, 220 West 41st Street has a host of more palatable neighbors; the structure’s unfortunate appearance is ultimately a symptom of economics and outdated zoning. Completion is expected in the spring of 2015.
