I am really interested to see how this crown turns out. If you go back to the renderings of Jan’15 there are no prominent diagonal bracing that we see now. Those, I think, will detract from the elegant gradation vertically you see in those early renderings. I hope I am expressing this observation properly. The bracing is now forming a very prominent series of 4 squat diamonds in the crown which are not in the renderings.

I believe the layout of the beams for the crown were changed while in the construction process. The small angled beams that we see were probably tested and they found that it did not hold well in a wind test. So, the current structure is definitely stronger than that last version. There’s even a model up at a sales gallery that features this same crown structure, I bet the tower will look best from hard angles in Weehawken and LIC.

Comcast Technology Center has this same type of cross braced structure in the lantern, since it’s only around 10x35 feet (Google Maps estimation)

That makes sense, too bad since it is so prominent, especially from Central Park.

I’m hoping the glass on the north side of the crown will help to obscure the structure further.

I’m very interested in how this crown will finally turn out. The bracing does look more prominent in the years old rendering that we often see of the building. The render shows the BMU and bracing, but it doesnt look as dramatic as it does currently with the crown only half clad on the southern elevation. It looks like they still have a bit to go on the south still.

I agree with @NYCityBoy too, I’m very curious what the crown will look like after the northern elevation is fully clad.

Does anyone know if there’s any information on what the lighting of the building at night? With a design like this it might actually look very striking at night (or it could be a dud, but there’s no shortage of buildings with only meh lighting, or none at all).

The top of the crown in the renderings clearly do not show the structural steel cross bracing X showing behind the transparent glass panels; so that much we know will change.

Maybe it will look exactly appears on this rendering with the only difference being that the structural steel X braces will be visible; and the overall affect of the crown will be slightly less pure.

I do not think it will look ‘CaCa’ - but certainly not as elegant as shown here in this rendering.

I believe those spaces of cladding that are intentionally missing on each face to let wind pass through the crown. That would be another way to prevent the tower from being blown down. If this is true, I hope they still have the lighting in the crown
