Minecraft Project: Postwar Lower Manhattan

Hey man, you actually inspired me to start a 1940’s version of a different neighborhood of New York, the Flatiron District! Here are a couple screenshots, this is all I’ll post, I don’t want to detract from your topic so you can remove this after you see it if you’d like but here it is…

Looks really good. It’s good to see new areas and new time frames explored.

I rebuilt the former world’s tallest building at 70 Broadway. I added the copper dome and upper floors, though I’ll have to remove them later. The upper part of the building was demolished/recladded in the 1940s and replaced with a brutalist cap.

For a summary of what happened to this building, here is a photo taken in early 1938:

Compared to this 1940 picture. The crown has become anguished brute.

If I ever snap and change the map year backwards to 1940 or something, just be aware it is most likely because of this building.

(Though it would also be in part due to how the Singer Building and 90 West looked before their crude 1940s renovations)

As long as you don’t go past 1953 after the 3rd Ave El was demolished😊

I’ve been trying to make gradual renovations to what should be the record holder for most forgotten skyscraper:

This is the first step and probably will be changed more but I’m trying to get every little indent and recession as accurate as I can. It’s very difficult when basically no pictures exist of it close up.

Honestly it was a beautiful building, and it’s a damn shame that it is as ghostly as it is. The red colored floors and the copper roof were pretty cool looking.

Edit: I’ve finished the renovations. I added a small arcade at Liberty and Temple that I never noticed, as well as a small entrance area just for filler. I also re-retrofitted the two main facades.

with the Brooklyn Bridge earthcam pointed in the wrong direction, we get a good look at this hidden gem of a Neo Gothic/Tudor style highrise at 55 Liberty Street:

Thought I’d try to replicate that angle:

I might actually rebuild it, or at least renovate it. I built it 2 years ago and most buildings of mine don’t survive that long without complete demolition or at least some TLC.

I’m a bit demotivated to work, but I’m formulating some certain plans. (I did however add 42 and 32 Broadway recently)

I think when I play the game more I will do some more renovation/rehabilitation work on some outdated buildings.
I have formulated a list for the future reconstruction projects: Demolition projects include:

60 Broadway, Knickerbocker Trust Building, 1908-1963, and 62 Broadway, 1915-1963

Sinclair Oil Building, 1909-

Federal Reserve Building, 1924/1939-

Barclay Vesey Building, 1926- (Tower remodeling only)

New York Stock Exchange, 1903-

11 Wall Street, 1922-

Broadway-Maiden Building, 1903-

48 Wall Street, 1929- (Not including 52 Wall St)

National Park Bank Addition, 1905-1958

52 Broadway, 1898-1981 (Recladding only, will not be demolished fully)

100 Broadway, 1896/1921-

More may be added, but these are the plans for now. I will post another update when I actually engage with these projects.

Nice Man! Hey when are you going to start working on the buildings along the water front? Like the famous 120 Wall Street/South Street?

Not sure yet but I promised myself I’d rebuild 48 Wall Street first so the layouts of the rest of the block can work, and so I can save 52 Wall Street from a similar fate.

I’ve recently been on a spiral away because school initially is a pain in the ass, I did though start a side project that I work on exclusively in school when I’m bored, all I’ve added to it is 270 Park Ave and 250 Park Ave so I have no idea what I’ll do with it or how long it’ll last

It’s dense steel!

Amazing model and detail! But you probably shouldn’t have held it around there lol

I got one of those too lol. Pretty nice to have, but the damn cupola broke off the tip lol. I keep it on top of an old Sewing Machine that I’m pretty sure came from the tower (not sure on specifics)

So I’m most likely going to restart and do another project with a better/proper street layout, this map has lots of flaws that I have only recently begun to notice, so I intend to completely eliminate them.

I’m going to try a schematic of NYCityMap for the layouts. It has a few flaws I’ve noticed, surprisingly, so if that doesn’t work for me I will use a pieced together version of a Bromley Landbook.

The new year will be 1960 or 1961. Starting at square one.

Wait, what?!?

Brother, have you ever considered using Google Earth or Google maps for layouts/buildings/everything? (Other than demolished buildings)

I intend to use earth for elevations and setbacks but I mainly use landbooks and the city’s website for measuring angles, side lengths, etc.

This one will have a schematic though, which will be helpful if MCEdit actually remembers that importing is kinda one of its functions and actually decides to do it

Wait what does that mean? (It’ll have a schematic) does it mean like the 2D street layout will appear on the map?

Basically. It’ll be the NYC website map so I’ll have to draw in streets over the WTC, Brooklyn Bridge, South Ferry, and Washington Market areas, and also the piers over Battery Park City, but besides that it’ll prevent any further restarts and irritations.
