Still waiting for digging to begin in earnest, but it’s imminent. Pics by the Jersey Journal:
There was a groundbreaking today at the site. And an urban Target store will open on the ground floor–great news for all the thousands of people who are moving into Journal Square who don’t own cars (and also for the thousands in Journal Square who already live here and don’t own cars)!
Wow that’s huge! I hope it will have a dedicated grocery section. Does the one in Downtown Brooklyn have one?
Great question. It does have groceries.
Yay! Let’s get even bigger in Jersey City!
That would only come down with the redevelopment of the PATH Station. Port Authority offices are located inside that office building.
But yes, it’s hideous lol
That PATH station is just as dumpy as the building that sits above it.
It could definitely use some love and redevelopment. But it has a lot of potential as it supports 10 car trains.
As the rest of the Square begins to transform, it will definitely highlight how much it needs to be fixed…
Walked by this afternoon and the site is busy busy busy.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but they’ll also be partnering with the neighboring Pompidou on a public art display with a “reimagined 9/11 memorial” in the plaza.
Very nice to see a new, modern public memorial being built, on top of the Covid memorial in Skyway Park also underway. Theoretically many of the young professional residents when this is complete wouldn’t have remembered or even been alive for 9/11. I hope there are more public memorials built everywhere, it’s so important to remember our history.
I looked into the sizes of some urban format Target stores. The one at CityPoint in downtown Brooklyn is 125,000 sq ft, which is nearly the size of a suburban Target. The one in Journal Sq will be 41,000 sq ft, which is much smaller, but not the smallest Target in the US (some are only 30k sq ft). A comparable Target is the one near World Trade Center, which is 45k sq ft.
According to a description of the Tribeca store:
“vast product assortment, including apparel for men, women, kids and baby; baby care items; home products catered to apartment and condo dwellers; health and beauty products; TVs and tech accessories; groceries, with an assortment of fresh produce and grab-and-go offerings”
Oof…that’s a bit disappointing. I think the organic grocery store opening at Journal Squared should help as well. However - the Tribeca Target is on 2 levels, while this will be all on one floor. So they could possibly have a larger section dedicated to groceries, since there’s more floor space to work with. Either way, it’s a great addition lol. I do wish Bed Bath and Beyond opens elsewhere in Jersey City again.
Journal Square, one of the great skylines of NYC?
It needs its own supertall centerpiece, al la DTBK with the Brooklyn Tower
Yeah Jersey City needs its own super tall. I think it’ll happen too down the line. It’s inching towards that goal.
On a side note but the Journal Square towers also gain a nice elevation boost, so in terms of skyline magnitude, they help to boost the height and give multi-phased developments like Journal Squared for example a much larger presence.
Hasn’t the FAA been blamed for a couple of height cuts in JC in years past? If so, that may limit the prospect of supertalls in JC.
