California Transit projects

Great idea.

Based on a March 2023 presentation from Metro construction management department staffer, a 3.5 year process to find a Link Union Station contractor is almost confirmed. RFP was first released in May 2021. The recent presentation estimates awarding the contract in Summer 2024.

(Expected to be completed in 2032, yikes)

Testing has begun on the Regional Connector underneath downtown Los Angeles. Trains will run through the tunnel without passengers. In the future there will be interlining on the Long Beach-Asuza and Santa Monica-East LA lines. Long Beach-Asuza (Long Beach-Pomona when the eastern extension is done) will be the longest LRT line in North America, if I remember correctly.

They still haven’t figured out what service patterns will look like around the junction in LAX/Westchester.

Option 1 involves a trunk line between Norwalk and LA’s Westside and a shuttle from LAX down to Redondo Beach (at some point that would extend further down to Torrance).

Option 2 are two lines - Westside-Redondo and LAX-Norwalk.

Option 3 is a Westside-Norwalk line and a shorter Redondo-South Central line, with an overlap between Westchester and South Central.

A “bus rapid transit”-like system is under construction in the south end of San Diego County, parallel to the US-Mexico border. It will connect to the Blue Line (trolley) and will also run as far west as the Pacific Ocean in Imperial Beach.

Project Timeline:

  • Fall 2019: Community engagement and project scoping
  • Early 2020: Operating plan finalized with input from public outreach and bus procurement
  • 2020-2022: Rapid station design and engineering, bus procurement
  • 2023-2024: Rapid improvements and station construction
  • September 2023: Rapid 227 soft opening service launch
  • Late 2024: Construction completion and full implementation of Rapid 227

For a minute there I thought that said 18 billion, and I was real confused. That would be more expensive than Sofi Stadium and Intuit Stadium combined, x2.
And Sofi is already the most expensive stadium ever

They’ll have to move it further inland.

A Sisyphean task is a pointless, fruitless, and unrewarding task that must be repeated over and over again.

No kidding -

The extension of the light rail would be from Alum Rock (current eastside terminus) to Eastridge. That line has a transfer to BART at Milpitas

They’re looking to double-track this commuter-rail segment in Riverside County.

This is a very impressive goal - bidirectional 30-minute service. That section currently only sees five trains a day in each direction on weekdays and two trains a day in each direction in weekends!

Once completed, the extended tracks will facilitate Metrolink operations, offer an alternative to driving, and help relieve congestion on Interstate 215 by providing reliable and efficient transit options for Riverside County commuters, who face some of the longest commutes in southern California. The project also will increase access to jobs and education in this traditionally underserved area, reduce air pollution, and help Metrolink achieve its goal of providing bidirectional service every 30 minutes in time for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.
