This feels like a direct attack on the idea of proportion and symmetry

Not only that it goes directly against the point of the White House. It was never meant to be a palace. Building a ballroom 3 times the size of the original building surely bodes well for our founders wishes…

You people are never happy with anything. The architectural style blends with the existing white house seamlessly, there has been a need for such a ballroom through many presidents, how can the greatest country in the world host events on a muddy south lawn in a tent? While I agree that Trumps ego has turned this into a controversial project, I feel like the addition itself is objectively beautiful. I look forward to seeing the quality of materials used, if this is done right it will be the most impressive feat of Neoclassical architecture in modern times…

This is not the first time something of such a large scale has been attempted, refer to McKinley’s plan to create a new east and west wing that dwarfed the size of the main white house.

It really feels like if it wasn’t Trumps name stamped on this everyone would praise this addition.

Much like Trump’s ballroom which is the subject of much criticism, contemporary architects of the time criticized that proposal as well and ultimately a scaled-down expansion was built after McKinley’s assassination.

And, unlike Trump’s ballroom where he decided he’s going to nuke the entire East Wing, there was Congressional approval for the 1902 expansions.

Per the White House Historical Association:

Roundly criticized by the architectural profession, the project stalled and after President McKinley’s assassination awaited a new chief executives decision.

Congressional approval in 1902 of what was called the Roosevelt Restoration witnessed implementation of several concepts of the Harrison and Bingham plans, if not their details.
