The Condos at 49 Chambers

I didn’t see any threads on this one, but one of the coolest renovations in progress is that of the old Emigrant Savings Bank located at 51 Chambers St.

Here is the wikipedia on the building itself: 49 Chambers - Wikipedia

And an article from Curbed on the renovations currently underway - Check out those gorgeous pics! Inside the Beaux-Arts Emigrant Savings Bank amid its condo conversion - Curbed NY

This is a pretty massive renovation and they appear to be right in the middle of the transformation at this time.

I like.

Unfortunately there is still that fallow parking lot next door. It has been empty for 48 years.

48 years! Well it’s a strange area, it’s definitely the “Civic Square” or whatever neighborhood, not Tribeca or downtown. A lot of the nearby buildings are owned by NYC government, but hopefully that parking lot will change soon.

The scaffolding recently came down. The restored front façade looks amazing. They added some windows on the sides, too.

That empty lot is absurd. Detectives and FBI agents don’t need special parking on a lot that’s probably worth at least $50m.

This used to be there, from 1878 to 1970 or 71.
Apparently it was torn down for the urban renewal plan going on nearby. Odd considering that the area was gone by 1969, as well as the fact that they obviously couldn’t do much with the site since both buildings next to it were each landmarks.

Sad. It was nice.

Not sure if people are actively living here yet b/c there is still work underway, evident on the Reade St. side. That said, very cool building: Luxury Tribeca Condo Building | 49 Chambers NYC

Unfortunately, the eyesore of a parking lot next door remains. I’m not sure if that parking lot is used for City or Federal gov’t… But you would think it would be cheaper for whoever owns it to sell that plot and just rent space in nearby parking garages; there is one literally 200 feet away!

I HATE that lot. What a waste of space.

I can’t wait until next year so I can start ranting about how this parking lot has literally been here for half of a century.
