NEW YORK | Various News About Our City and Q&A

I was out at Hudson River Park today. So was half of the city. Many were not wearing masks. There was very limited or no distancing.

We are all already ignoring the stupid ADVISORY already. It is time to re-open everything and end the fascism of the elected Democrats. This stupid charade is OVER, Vitamin D is rising across the population and we have partial herd immunity, if there is any uptick in transmission the hospitals can absorb it.

The goal posts have kept shifting, the fascist Democrats now have so much power they think they can do whatever they want, this needs TO END NOW.

I can only imagine how things will be tomorrow. Almost 80 degrees.

Agreed. This is madness.
What people don’t seem to understand is reopening doesnt mean people HAVE TO go out – if they are worried, they are free to stay home for longer. But, from the looks of it, doesn’t seem like there’s too many people who are particularly worried about exposure if they go out. So who are we doing this for?

Over in Jersey City, Liberty State Park was packed as well. I have never seen the parking lots here completely filled, probably except for holidays like the 4th of July. It was really nice to see and plenty of people were wearing masks, or at least had one on them. I agree that we can’t expect to sit home for too long, and that the only way to get accustomed to social distancing for the near future is to start practicing it in our daily lives. But seriously? “the fascism of elected Democrats?” More than 18k people died in NYC alone. Restrictions are finally easing up, but let’s not forget how many people have died in such a short period of time. Stay at home orders were advised not just by the state governments but also the CDC and the federal taskforce. This isn’t some “charade” and calling it that is disrespectful for those of us who have family currently fighting to save the lives of fellow Americans, without a mention of their political party. Let’s stick to the point of the subforum here “Various News About Our City” without unnecessary political rhetoric.

IDK. You are def entitled to your opinion but my opinion is that the elected Democrats were the direct cause of the 20K+ deaths (per Wiki now deadliest disaster in NYC history). They take credit for the lockdown, they should take credit for killing 20K+ New Yorkers.

The only plus side to their abject and total incompetency is that it gave us partial herd immunity. Combined with rising Vitamin D population-wide, that is why #s are now decreasing, IMO. The half-toothed lockdown has had nothing to do with the decrease in cases, again, IMO.

We are now dealing with unprecedented economic fallout from an unscientific reaction that is as incompetent and callous as the same electeds’ initial response to the virus. It IS fascist, and it needs to end.

I will add that the lockdown is not only fascist, it is blatantly elitest. The UI website does not work anymore. NYC is out of UI $. It is easy for people in ivory towers to lament that everyone should be staying home. It is now completely unfeasible for the existing policy to remain in place, because the reality on the ground is that middle income and low-income New Yorkers are now out of work, en-masse, with NO GOVERNMENT HELP, when the same government is telling them they will “support them” among other lies. It is beyond f*cked up.

The same government that killed 20K+ New Yorkers through incompetence is now threatening the future of ALL NEW YORKERS through unscientific policy rooted in political pandering and not in numbers or science.

Look, I’m not going to say more than what I stated earlier. I said my piece and I’ll let your opinions speak for itself. Stating our opinions might or should be a discussion for another subforum and not this one.

We are free to disagree! I think this is the designated “city politics” thread, so no worries, as long as our interpersonal discourse between one another is civil (my rhetoric is directed at the politicians, not at you).

Yeah I agree! I’m only 16 and this staying at home order sucks at times. But I wouldn’t say it’s the democrats fault. It’s no ones fault. This is how some people deal with the virus. Stay at homes orders are very frustrating and an obstacle for our everyday lives, BUT it’s for the best. It’s to make sure that the virus does not spread, that people are safe, and that the virus dies down. And many people are creating new things at home, learning new things, and most importantly people are coming together (like the clapping at 7:00). This is just my opinion, but I wouldn’t put the blame on anyone.

Fascism: an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization. I would say that by definition the only fascism in America right now is emanating from the White House.

I will look at one particular point in the above discussion: that of IU being completely unavailable to everyone I have spoken to on the matter. My wild estimation is that about 70% of all requests for UI help from ‘out-of-work’ New Yorkers is going unanswered. What is the truth: we are ‘clerically’ incapable of handling the surge of request but will catch up soon, OR we are out of funds to pay UI benefits. It is one or the other; and either is shameful for ‘the Greatest City in the World’ - my god. I listen the Governor’s press briefings droning on with redundant platitudes void of any new information - and never directly, honestly and competently addressing this BIG issue of Unemployed New Yorkers left out in the cold.
There are a lot a good opinions stated here; but the elephant in the room that WE must address is that of UI benefits for all of US ‘private sector’ workers. I do agree also, our local government response IMHO has been unscientific, draconian and elitist.

I must add the following afterthought observation that supports my ‘elitist’ comment. True story. In one rare instance where a reporter asked Cuomo about ‘all the unemployed new yorkers’ his response was the following: “let them go get jobs, there are jobs, plenty of jobs in fact, Amazon is hiring, FedEX is hiring, Walmart and Home depot is hiring - they can go get jobs there if needed.” Those statements are BOTH untrue and elitist. Please do look for this video of the press conference - it is almost too hard to believe without photographic evidence. The first step to a solution is ‘uncensored’ commentary such as is found here on YIMBY - I get blocked on TWITTER… :astonished:

Trumpist politics are nationalistic, sure. But I dont see the authoritarianism there. the only authoritarianism comes from left-wing politicians who seek omnipresent government and complete control of individuals’ speech and rights, and are using this health crisis to expand their radius of influence.

I feel like all of the government : Nancy Peolsi , Chuck Schumer, Aoc, Trump, Mitch McConnell and many more needs to get the fuck out. It’s also time to tell big corporations to pay your taxes or else

That is the main issue I have with “left-wing” politics. I am currently being ‘shadow banned’ on twitter for raising ‘facts’ about some of the incompetent actions of our Democratic leadership. I am talking about stating simple Facts or Opinions - there is no fair minded, logical basis for censorship of Free Speech. I find the YIMBY for fums very good in that respect: there is a strong indications that the notion of Free Speech is held in high regard by owners and admin alike - not the case on Twitter, or many other forums for that matter. The UI issue was raised here in this thread, and I am raising this ‘precise’ issue on other social media platforms: I believe there is a ‘trending news’ influence that originates from forums such as YIMBY and other social media outlets - trending news that is eventually - unavoidably - picked up by MSM main stream media.

It’s unbelivable that somebody would call him ‘‘authoritarian’’ after he was put on a freaking show trials in a country where he is a President for something that was later debunked as a fake news. When there is an open censoring of his supporters on social media while the media that is against him is fully allowed to be operate without a single outlet being banned. When his supporters are often attacked by far left Antifa while protests against him are fully allowed to exist.
Even the other side knows who cares more about freedom of speech, and who wants to limit it when people start telling what they don’t want to hear.

I wouldn’t go that far. I just think it’s hypocritical for people to call trump authoritarian or fascist without really understanding what those terms mean— it is about population control, not right wing values. And the people doing the majority of the people-controlling these days are Democrats, who have taken it upon themselves to tell people they can’t go to the beach their taxes pay for, or express dissenting views in public.

The fact that the White House has not allowed congress to perform their oversight duties, on the executive branch that are spelled out in the constitution, puts them on the road to an authoritarian regime. This in unprecedented and has never happened in the history of this country to the extent that it is happening today. The White House will not even let Dr. Fauci testify to the House as they have not let so many others in the past to hide all of the corruption.

It’s a long story so I’m going to make it short. My sister and I have Lyme disease that is somewhat similar to the symptoms to corona virus. I don’t know how we got it because the only place you’ll see me in a forest is in central park. My sister has it worst than me and for years we went to doctors and the government they would say your crazy and this that. She almost died from it. Fast forward to now we are getting much better because we used a lot of herbs and other non western medicine but I’m still depressed on what happened because what our government did. My family is putting a lawsuit against NY government, doctors, CDC and round up. So when I say these people are evil and dumb it’s not even the word for them.

A lot of you are forgetting the reason we following social distancing and it not because the “fascist” democrats want to mess with you. Covid-19 is a very dangerous virus that is killing thousands of people even with these social distancing rules so just imagine if we just stopped following the advisory today and reopened everything. We can already see how people are not following the guidelines at parks and during the airshow this past week. It not even because these people want to make a statement against the government rather it just so hard to change the way we were before this pandemic. It hard to not want to socialize, but it a matter of life and death for many people.

You talk about Herb immunity, but scientists are not even sure if it works since some people have gotten COVID-19 multiple times. Before April the White House even said that the virus would disappear in warmer weather, but we seen that it spreading in hotter climate countries like Brazil or Spain. They’re just so many unknowns since this virus is still new.

So yes we going through tough times and it might even get worse before it gets better, but it important for as a country to be united and to follow the guideline as much as possible.

We only need to look at history to see what happens if we mess up. It might be easy to think that we superman and this virus won’t affect me because “I healthy and young”, many people though that and have died as a result of that to COVID-19.

Let make sure this doesn’t happen^

Also on a side note yes democrats can be dicks on social media, but why the hell do Trump supporters always like to play the victim. The people who always make jokes about shooting people and deporting any non-Trump loving Americans are always getting offended that people don’t kiss Trump’s ass. It such a weird cult thinking there.
