I am so worried for NYC. Stay safe and healthy everyone! I’ve been saving for a big 4th of July trip to NYC with my sister since January. I hope by then we will have fought this terrible virus back!
We are getting through it fine. The virus is ramping up here fastest right now, but hopefully this is a sign we will peak first in the US and be back in business ASAP. (It’d make sense because we have the most foreign travelers here so we got hit first…)
All the businesses are being such good sports about the shutdowns, hopefully most of them survive through the spring. I think everyone will be very happy and relieved by July 4.
I hope everyone’s elderly relatives, friends are okay!
“ President Trump is dispatching a Navy hospital ship to New York Harbor, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday — as the number of coronavirus cases in the Empire State leaped to 2,382 with 20 dead.
The feds will be lending a hand by sending the USNS Comfort, a 1,000-bed US Navy hospital ship to help combat the expected shortage of beds the city and state face.
The US Army Corps of Engineers is also now in the state to help, Cuomo said.”
looks like we’ll only be able to watch as-of-right projects for the time being.
Through an executive order, Mayor Bill de Blasio put all projects that must go through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure on hold. As of Tuesday, there were 119 active Ulurp applications, of which 45 had officially started the seven month-long process, according to an analysis by The Real Deal .
Department of City Planning spokesperson Joe Marvilli indicated that owners who filed the remaining 74 Ulurp applications can still work with the city to get their applications ready for public review.
several thousand employees? They’re going to have to reposition it then. I don’t think it would normally have that capacity.
I don’t want to see that beautiful ship leave Philly. I see it all the time and I absolutely love it, it just hurts looking at the condition it’s in

Don’t be deceived by its height. The building is quite large in terms of square footage.
What’s the word on the effects of covid-19 and NYC construction? Short term, we could see closing of construction sites. Long term recession could mark the end of an age. But a recession could be short lived, so unclear how it fits with the construction cycle…
I have to say Cuomo has been showing great crisis leadership. De Blasio on the other hand seriously considered paralyzing the city with a shelter in place order.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order, released Wednesday night, that requires businesses to limit their in-office workforce to 50 percent. The governor announced the order Wednesday morning but did not specify what “essential” businesses would be exempt from the rule, which goes into effect 8 p.m. Friday. The order includes construction, transportation infrastructure, financial institutions, shipping and “essential operations of residences” among the businesses that do not have to comply with the rule. The Empire State Development Corp. is charged with releasing a full list of businesses by 5 p.m. Thursday, according to the order. Businesses are permitted to request “essential” status from ESD.
During multiple media interviews on Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio indicated that he favors the San Francisco model.
“So, I think construction has been exempted so far for valid reasons. Whether it is going to be tightened up going forward is a different discussion,” he told NY 1.
It’s too early to say what response is correct, Deblasio’s or Cuomo’s. Without adequate testing we’re going in blind. People that have C19 but are asymptomatic will be spreading it without quarantining. People that have something but don’t know if it’s C19 will be spreading it without quarantining. Repeat this cycle, with increasing chances of transmission and we’re suddenly in Wuhan or Italy’s shoes, even though we had an ample head start. We’ll see if the Bay Area or NYC handled it correctly in a month or however long it takes to get widespread testing/infection numbers/death tolls.
Take a hint from for profit organizations that voluntarily shut their doors last week, at great expense. If they’re worth their salt their CEOs are following the advice of experts and are taking on a hit now–while we still have some modicum of control–to try and help prevent an increasingly catastrophic, prolonged pummeling in the future.
Keep in mind that we probably had people started spreading the disease earlier than Italy did… I think there are hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of shadow cases in the US. The fact that so few people have been coming to the ERs and/or dying is a good sign we will not be anything like Italy. Another main issue there is that the average corona patient there is almost 80 years old, whereas here it’s more evenly distributed for people who are more robust.
if a shelter-in-place order is enacted, most if not all small businesses are dead in the city. Tens of thousands in the city and suburbs will lose their jobs. New York State undoubtedly already has >10,000 cases (disparity between confirmed cases and tests), but you need to weigh the economic consequences of emergency actions versus the spread of the virus. It’s the difference between a recession and a depression coming off of this crisis. Cuomo recognizes this, DeBlasio is unwilling to face the reality of it.
What’s worse? New York State having potentially hundreds of thousands of cases (and potentially thousands of deaths, but thats speculative), or New York State taking an incalculable hit to its economy? There’s a moral answer (DeBlasio - halt everything until the spread slows, less people die) and there’s a pragmatic answer (Cuomo - keep businesses barely afloat and hope for the best)
It’s really bad. But it doesn’t have to be worse.
Saving lives is always more important than money…
ALWAYS!
“All workers in non-essential businesses across New York state are required to stay home in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic , New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at a press conference Friday morning.”
“We need everyone to be safe, otherwise no one can be safe,” Cuomo said.
“So we’re going to put out an executive order today: New York state on pause: Policies that Assure Uniform Safety for Everyone.”
Civil fines and mandatory closures for businesses that don’t comply with the new mandate will be enforced, Cuomo announced.
sigh… economic depression here we come. Cuomo decided to dance around the shelter in place order but still shut down business, like a true politician. But at least we can still move around at will.
@robermat I wasn’t talking about money, I was talking about employment. Healthy employment levels are essential to maintain a functioning society. If the unemployment rate skyrockets to 20% (which some have predicted) who’s going to pay the bills? The state can issue a temporary moratorium on payments and provide a lifeline handout, but those funds will dry up in short order.
The economy will rebound. It was in a great place right before this happened unlike in 2008.
Studies show that thousands die every year when unemployment goes up… a very outdated study said 4000 lives per 1% of employment.
I don’t like these shutdowns all that much because there’s a very real case to make that a depression kills off more people than this virus.
I have zero confidence the economy will quickly rebound— the legacy carrier airlines are going to need a bailout soon, followed by the big hotels. These types of travel shutdowns are extremely destructive. Industries atrophy very quickly.
Studies also show that mortality decreases in times of economic depression. Less activity, fewer vices, better environmental conditions, etc.
There’s no need to make these extrapolations when we have a very concrete crisis heading our way. The primary focus should be on tackling the spread of the virus right now.
