NEW YORK | Second Avenue Subway

What a bizarre choice for 116th and not at all future-proofing the station.

No clue but I find it bizarre, especially for such a shallow station. This type of configuration is only found at rather deep stations such as Clark Street, 168th Street, 181st Street or 191st Street. All of those stations are extremely deep and it makes sense that they are accessed by elevator.

I can only assume this option was chosen to prevent disruption to the utilities above the tunnel and because it is cheaper. They seem to be decking over the middle track section of the tunnel and making it an island platform.

I just skipped forward a little in the video and they mention there are stairs in each entrance but for emergency use only. This is mentioned at 30:47.

I’m still not understanding this choice. The stairs maybe egress into a building that they can’t have passengers regularly pass through unless it’s an emergency?

We go from large af mezzanines to little rat holes is there no in-between these extremes?

It’s probably a spiral staircase that is compact but useable in emergencies. All of the stations I listed have emergency exit stairs as well.

The closest example of this configuration is Clark Street which has it’s entrance inside a building as well. It’s likely a similar situation where the stairs lead to a side door on the building.

I don’t see how this will fly.

A store owner is complaining about being eminent domain’d for the SAS phase 2. Commenters surprisingly dont seem to fully side with the complainer.

Isn’t that like a blatant lie? The Hudson tunnel project’s funding was secured ages ago, and I recall Gateway remarking that it was too late for the federal gvt to revoke it.

The Orange Idiot does whatever he wants. The law does not apply to him. He’ll probably hold whatever hasn’t been disbursed yet hostage until his petty demands are met. He can’t kill the project but he’ll do whatever it takes to sabotage or stall it until his demands are met.

As long as they make it to 2028, they should be ok…

2028 won’t save us.

The military is trained to follow orders (this is true of any modern military force and is not unique to the United States). The purpose of boot camp is to turn young people into mindless drones. There are all sorts of systems set up (court martial, dishonorable discharge, etc.) to ensure strict obedience. We are entering a dark time in our nation’s history. The Second Avenue Subway extension will only be used by folks who haven’t yet been born.
