I don’t mind it. At this point ANYTHING is better than the crap hole Penn has been for decades. They have done some nice renovations in the more recent years but it’s lip stick on a pig. This will be a dramatic change in a sense for sure.

Agreed. Considering MSG being removed is extremely unlikely, a modern Penn concourse and a renovated MSG are the most realistic things. Of all the proposals that utilize this approach, I agree that this is one of the best.
Amtrak also made an announcements regarding the upgrade plans.
Penn Transformation Partners will build a brand-new, world-class station that will provide daily commuters and tourists with a more seamless travel experience through a vibrant gateway into America’s largest city.
The transformation of New York Penn Station will:
Construct a grand entrance on Eighth Avenue to a new train hall
Replace cramped, decrepit walkways with open, beautiful concourses
Expand track capacity, including the introduction of at least limited through-running on the regional rail network
Enable new retail, better wayfinding, and other passenger experience improvements, all while maintaining the iconic Madison Square Garden with a new cladding for a classical look, and
Improve the station’s existing subterranean structure
Good news is that horrible Grand Penn proposal is likely dead. They also are taking through-running somewhat seriously, with the official announcement mentioning “limited through-running”.
I don’t know how they’re going to expand track capacity without building new platforms but through-running can at least increase capacity since trains can run more frequently with shorter dwell times.

Obviously happy with the choice/decision, though it seems like a lot of media about the decision is saying different things about whats being done.
Its also likely/possible that whatever we saw from ASTM originally is not what is going to be built. Regardless, I still liked the interior concourse when Woods Bagot designed it instead of PAU.

Duffy says the federal government is willing to pledge 8 billion dollars, which honestly doesn’t seem like enough to address the scale of what needs to be done. We also don’t have recent renderings, since all the articles show a design from 3 years ago which might not reflect what they’re going with now, since they mentioned there will be “classical elements” in the design, whatever that means. I think you’re right that changes have been made. PAU’s page for the project, which once had extensive renderings and diagrams of the ASTM proposal, has gone dark with an ominous “Coming Soon” message.

The renderings honestly look like every other proposal I have seen of this. Just more masonry, more brass, and they changed the design of the mid block hall to have a curvilinear frame instead of a rectilinear one. The big “IF” of this is getting the money, it’s a dear leader project for sure, but the dear leader has been having a hard time getting his stuff pushed through congress.
The real story here isn’t Donnie for once, it’s Vishaan Chakrabarti trying for over 15 years to have his name written alongside Charles Follen McKim. I remember his presentation to the MSA in like 2011, everyone else treated it has a gimmick he brought out a scale fucking model of the New Penn district. He has wanted this so bad.

I will refrain from making a political comment (I’m not a fan of his) but I will simply say that i hope that a redone version of this removes the ads, I think it will be a lot classier and prettier without gigantic digital and print billboards..

I think the chances of this just never happening are quite high. I also don’t think the end result is a great solution for what will surely be greater than $8 billion.

I’m glad to see the platforms aren’t an afterthought. The last thing we need is a grand central situation where the train hall is gorgeous but the track level remains dungeon-like.

It actually looks nice. I’ll take a corner that says DJT (Can always be removed later) in exchange for a modern upgrade. It looks similar to earlier renderings, and it has gold finishes. The platform upgrades are huge improvements, and earlier proposals did not show off what changes may look like. I am also interested in how they may delete some of the columns as well, since some hold up MSG.

This version seems to let in even more light on the 8th Avenue side it appears? And I do agree the external column arrangement does a better job of reflecting Moynihan station across the street.
The revision makes the 7th Ave side look a little too Vegas like, less light let in, crowded, and plastered with billboards in comparison.
