I still like the initial proposal more (in regards to the interior fitout). There was just more color and rhythm to it and a good sense of warm and cool tones, the amount of stone and warm colors on the interior of the new iteration is extremely overwhelming and that adds to the almost claustrophobic feeling I get when looking at the interior. Because the previous version had more glass, it felt more open and transparent.
Though like Robert mentioned, I do like the waterfall feature in the middle, but I think the previous iteration would’ve faired better with it.
I love the exterior stone. The initial “renderings” seemed to depict a greenish glass facade, which I think would have looked lousy. I think that the granite and limestone are beautiful.
There were never any actual exterior renders of the initial iteration, not quite sure where you’re getting this from. The axon diagram wasn’t depicting the glass in its real tone if that’s what you’re referring to, especially since that one diagram changes colors and quality based on what version of the image one is looking at.
Also, granite or limestone, its not both but I’d say it’s most likely limestone over granite.
There are a number of articles that mention limestone/granite, but all the ones I’ve read said or, I haven’t come across one that says and, since it’s not likely the 2 stones would ever be used together in an application such a this.
I imagined you were referring to that, but as I mentioned, the image changes colors based on which image is being viewed, but still the glass isn’t green, more the fact that it is being highlighted with the yellow.
I still hate MSG being there but this view is the only thing I’ve seen that seems somewhat decent. I hope people don’t buy into this though. MSG needs to go. At the VERY least demolished and then built higher above its current location.
Building it higher wouldnt do anything as that wouldn’t negate the fact that the arena still needs a loading bay/dock, one which would remain at the level that it currently is at and is still planned to remain in both the state and ASTM’s schemes as is visible in the cut sections. So that can’t be an “at the very least option” at all anyways because it wouldnt do anything.
Would you rather the state build their version (or FXCollaborative’s version rather) with an intact MSG as it appears today with the hulu theater still there?
I’d like to see what other firms come up with if others make/are making their own bids since the process is open to any firm that wants to.
I noticed the website mentions the thing in the middle of the main entrance is a water feature which is incredibly cool. I suspected it was a water feature and it turned out to be true.
A new water feature, displaying a map of the national rail network in abstracted bas-relief, will be Penn Station’s answer to Grand Central’s clock, an easily recognizable internal landmark that can serve as a de facto meeting spot within the station.
Looks like the loading dock is only one floor above the tracks. The reason MSG needs to be torn down is because that ceiling needs to be raised. MSG was built too low without enough ceiling height. This grand new entrance will only affect a fraction of the stations. The majority will still be crammed below the low hanging MSG loading dock.
I’m still in the tear down the MSG camp. This is the best lipstick we’ve seen but it’s still lipstick. LaGuardia is proof that high ceilings in public structures are paramount. It used to be cramped with low ceilings but it was torn down and now has massive ceilings. In the end tall ceilings really the only thing that matters when you look at it objectively.
An intermediate floor (level B) was already torn down between the track mezzanine (level A) and the loading dock/street level, as I mentioned, as is shown in the section cut diagrams. The ceiling would be raised to 24’… MSG was not built too low, everything above street level is built normally. The insertion of level B is what currently makes it seem low, the loading dock is level with street level, it is not hanging low.
If Vornado sticks with plans to build offices on this site, nothing will rise here for at least ten years. They should make this site a park in the interim.
What I don’t understand is why pay for the Hulu Theater instead of taking it by eminent domain? I haven’t read the article, so maybe it goes in to this.
