I wonder what they did with that little one after it was dismantled.

Circa 1958. At 18:40 the rarest color angle ever of the Singer Building pops up and I literally jolted up all wide eyed when I saw it

EDIT: - YouTube

Circa 1960. Another awesome aerial part at 5:58, which accelerates to show the Singer Building and Radio Row in high quality and color.

I’m blown away by these two pictures, but especially the second one. Something about them looks like they were taken today. Not 50-60 years ago.

Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know Manhattan had a tramway system!

The Brooklyn Bridge exit, Manhattan side. 1954, and 1958; the way it used to be.

What a waste.

Edit: Few more to add to this collection.

Brooklyn Bridge, 1962:

The larger setback enthralled building is 100 Gold Street, a classical style building from 1921 that was demolished in 1967. The bulkier Healy Building, on the right, dated back to 1891.
On the left is a demolition site where the Black Building(200 William Street) and 3 others were bulldozed that year for more entrance and exit ramps.

1965: People walking across the bridge during the blackout. The massive bulky building in center is the Rhinelander Building, built in pieces between 1893 and 1910. It was demolished in 1969 for One Police Plaza.

18 days left for the Singer Building, 4 months after the last of touches were applied to 140 Broadway, the Battery Garage was becoming a permanent part of the cityscape.

This picture reminded me. Anyone remember this poor lil’ guy?

In a perfect world the lil guy would survive and the tall one next door would have been replaced.

Agreed. I want to see it come down just as much as I always have. The white cladding they gave it doesn’t help. It’s literally just spray painting a turd white.

Gives me weird nostalgic vibes even though I was born in 2003. Like it perfectly displays a forever noteworthy time gone to history that will never be renewed, but always cherished.

For some reason reminds me of this song which I am also oddly nostalgic over

Edit to avoid over posting: 50 years to the day without a Singer Building.

Interesting 1980s document I accidentally stumbled across; an assessment from the 75 Wall Street Barclays development. It goes into a lot of detail on the status of the site and discusses the buildings on the site, from the demolished 19th century tenements, to the then-recently-demolished 13 story neoclassical Orient Building, to the 14 story Georgian style Barclays Building which was then still standing.(I was on a hunt for this last building a while ago)

From the same document is this map of downtown. Battery Park City is mapped out already. A number of developments from the mid to late 80s are labeled already. Also notable are those that hadn’t come to fruition yet: the 2 small buildings where the Millenium Hilton are, the 60 Wall Street site, and the WTC7 site.

Amazing how a 716’ tower is only the 62 tallest in the city.

Not just sharing this because of my Singer Building addiction but that it is a great showing of decades old Broadway as well. Also at the end you can see workers halting demolition for the St. Paul Building to watch the parade.

Waiting til these 1,500 foot towers are considered old and just a part of the mass.
