For decades, the wall along Damrosch Park symbolized more than just a barrier between Lincoln Center and Amsterdam Houses across the street. Speaker after speaker referenced the complicated history of San Juan Hill, the predominantly Black and Puerto Rican neighborhood razed during Robert Moses-era urban renewal to make way for the performing arts complex.

Now, with shovels in hand and a ceremonial section of wall broken, officials framed the next phase of Lincoln Center as an attempt to reverse some of that separation.

The West Initiative is expected to be completed in 2028 and will include a redesigned Damrosch Park, expanded public green space, improved accessibility and a welcoming transition between Lincoln Center and Amsterdam Avenue.
