Absolutely no logic in doing so
Why would they?
With that said, I have taken flights departing from the end of that concourse, and it’s a hike. It’s a full 1km from security to the last gate. They need more moving walkways, or a little tram, or shuttle, or something.
But the overall layout of JFK doesn’t leave many options for a different concourse layout. If you want to have X number of gates, (as I’m sure Delta does,) there are only so many ways to arrange things on that piece of land.
This would entail a more extensive redevelopment of Terminal 4. It would require the phased construction of a new concourse and tunnel/people mover system, which Delta/IAT have expressed no public interest in doing. I could see this being a long-term future for the terminal, though almost certainly not within this half of the century.
In other news, I flew through JFK T5 twice this weekend. Got to see the renumbered gates myself, which was kind of surreal. Signage is in place for T6, which will have gates 601-612. Interesting that the numbers already account for the two gates that were left out of the current plan vs the initial proposal.
Over at the west end of T5, construction is well underway on the connector to T6. Through the glass which once overlooked T7, you can now see the simultaneous construction of the great hall and sterile corridor!
From the airfield, I didn’t get much of note (especially because my arrival was at night), only some shots of the extensive T6 glass facade.
Also, I believe this glass walkway is new. It appears to connect an additional gate to T5’s sterile corridor.
Additional non-pictured T6 updates are newly-poured roadway supports in front of T7 and additional curtain panels on the departures canopy.
I’m surprised you didn’t point out that the T5-related signage is in the new design language all the new terminals are using. It’s nice and easy to read. It makes sense to update everything for consistency and goes well with the whole T5 renovation project.
That is a new feature, and it seems to utilise essentially a non-movable glass jet bridge segment
You’re right, I guess I’m slacking😂 I have nostalgia for the old signage, but the new design is really nice. Hope to see it retrofitted into Terminal 8 soon as well.
I guess that’s the closest we’ll see to a glass jetbridge at JFK!
More like the closest we’ll see in any NYC area airport…
Some updates from around the airport. At Terminal One, finishes seem to be going up on the interior and the floor is being fitted with radiant heating over 500,000 square feet. At Terminal 6, interior finishes are well underway, with plaster forms on the walls and ceiling and floor tiles going in.
The 5th image shows some kind of under-floor heating system. That’ll be a pain to fix if it breaks or leaks.
My thoughts exactly. Radiant heating for a building like this is an unusual choice, no?
Took a taxi from LGA to Manhattan. The roads are in such bad bad shape. Potholes and poorly patched. There is trash everywhere. They have worse roads than I have seen anywhere. Are they under NYC or NY? Any idea when they will get fixed?
The roads around EWR are even worse. Its both confusing and riddled with potholes and litter. I can only assume that if they aren’t PANYNJ owned then they wont touch them. A number of terrible roads around EWR are owned by NJ or whatever municipality is adjacent to the airport.
It is a shame.
All the taxes we pay and yet can’t keep our streets clean. I can only imagine how jarring it is for first time visitors to see the supposedly richest city in the world with trash along the road ways leaving the airports.
Yes, horrible first impression and an extremely uncomfortable ride. NYC deserve better. Who is in charge ? NY state or NYC ?
If you think it’s bad on the way to the airport, you should see when it blows into city hall.
Ok, this’ll probably be my longest post yet. Had to drop someone off at JFK today and used the chance to do my most comprehensive construction review yet.
Starting with Terminal One, the frontage is starting to look complete now that the full departures slab has been poured. The exit road from this slab already wraps underneath the new T4 access road, illustrating the sheer pace at which they work. The canopy system is starting to be installed at the arrivals level, and I imagine we’ll see this work extend to departures soon. Interior column finishes continue to go up, and I’m continuing to love that flowing design they’ve got for the fan columns. Up on the roof, the solar installation work is easily visible.
The garage’s construction is underway, as was pointed out. It’s not exactly slightly, but I believe it will have cladding to mask this. The other big utilitarian project I’ve noticed, the new substation next to T1, appears to have wrapped up with some nice landscaping (sorry for the crappy photo)
I observed the most progress at T6. Finished continue to go up on the interior and exterior. In addition to the ceiling cladding, I noticed columns being clad indoors. The overhang continues to see more cladding, and the exposed cylindrical columns appear to have some paint on them in differing shades of white and grey. It also appears they’ve set up an earthcam facing T6, though I’m not sure if it can be accessed.
The most exciting part for me was seeing the progress on the T6 roadway. Major work has been done on the section through T7, where all columns appear to be poured and most of the girders are in place. I noticed two more being prepped for installation. I think all of the girders might be in place by the end of the summer. My guess was that JMP was going to build the entire roadway as part of phase 1, and this seems to be the case. If any part of the roadway isn’t done this summer, it would be the new T5 exit road and potentially the entrance to the departures roadway. Given how complicated the sites for those are, I imagine careful coordination is required. Additionally, I didn’t get any pictures, but as I was leaving JFK I noticed they had poured concrete piers and had a crane in place to install the T5/T7 garage connector bridge.
It’s pretty impressive what JMP has done to effectively breathe new life into T7. Walking through it, I noticed the place was bustling with a nice variety of carriers. That said, the recent progress on the T6 roadways, while exciting, has significantly worsened the experience in and around the building. Due to its deep personal significance to me, I’ll miss T7 dearly, however it truly is time for it to come down. This time next year, the demo process should be underway. With that in mind, we’re less than a year from the two new terminals opening, so we’re in T7’s last year now!
I’ll leave the avgeeks among you with some photos of the action I saw along the way. Was especially exciting to see a LH 747-400 departing
Amazing update! Thanks!
This is a great comprehensive update. Plenty of great progress is visible. I do believe there will be some kind of cladding on the parking deck since many renders do feature that.
The 3rd photo of your T6 series also shows an EarthCam-branded camera mounted on the railing of the parking garage. It’s a shame its feed is likely not publicly viewable as it seems to have a nice view of part of T6.
killer update!
Awesome update. Looking forward to June 2026 for its opening.
