Grim.

I bet that courtyard looks cool at night with all the arches lit. But during the day it looks a little… sketch.

Wait until plantings are in for a final judgment?

I dont think plants will save this courtyard, HerrDavid’s comment was pretty nice, it looks abysmal because of the surrounding atmosphere, it would look completely different and probably more inviting if the arches and building were a completely different color.

The vibes are “medieval prison yard” but hey you never know, a little green might really liven things up.

Yes, the choice of color and texture makes this place grim; if the materials were different, it would have been a different story…

Another case of rendering against reality fiasco…maybe the trees will help :crossed_fingers:

I have low expectations for the park, especially since the actual tower is pretty lame and worse than the renderings, I don’t expect the park to be any better.

This is the same guy who gave us this "beauty’ - let’s say that residential is not his strength

Alamela—You showed us a really ugly building. Hard to believe people live in it. But it is quite different from the Wall Street Tower, which I almost like! I know that cuts against the grain on this chain, but such is life. I like the color and mixed tones of the facade. Just a bit of another tone would certainly give the building a lift. And I credit the design for bringing a new texture and color to Manhattan’s mix. This is by no means near the top of my list of favorites but in my mind there are a lot of worse buildings floating around here.

That is an ugly building, indeed! I just wanted to highlight what I found to be one of Adjaye’s biggest shortcomings: his choices for façade finishes. He takes risks, and often they don’t pay off - I can say that for this example and the Wall st. Tower too.

I’m glad that Adjaye took the chance with this facade material here, even if it didn’t entirely pay off like the renderings. I think the stone lacks the golden sheen from the renderings which makes it look more grim–perhaps the coarser texture makes it less able to reflect sunlight nicely. Even then, I like this tower a lot more than the offensively safe (boring) 19 Dutch nearby!

Thanks TWD—I too appreciate risk taking. As you say it doesn’t always work. But architects that fail to take risks rarely design great buildings.

Lol, it’s a no from me… :-1: The panel hues differ way to much, If the panels were singular it would’ve looked better because the variation would’ve been spread out more evenly, but because they are 2,3, and even 4 windows wide, it looks bad. And then there’s the top not being bronze.

Not only is the top not that lovely bronze, but the fluting on the top also was changed. It’s such a disappointment. All the bright bronze that was promised never happened. You can also see in the rendering of the park that the door frames, etc. were a nice bronze, but in the real photos, it’s all dull. The removal of the bronze is in my opinion contributing to why this tower is so depressing.

Yeah the developer value engineering the materials is not helping matters. Adjaye designs some beautiful buildings but clearly you can’t skimp on costs.

I agree; it looks value engineered…the result is indeed dull.

In this rendering, the arches in the plaza look like terrazzo (A better choice for me)

I’m very lost as to why the trees haven’t been planted yet if there are supposed to be trees, thats normally not a bucket list item you do after opening a little plaza.

I’m sure a global pandemic > stock market panic >extreme uncertainty in Manhattan real estate had nothing to do with that either.

Then again…
