Especially in this part of town where everybody double parks.
They’re always focused on the bright and shiny.
Any proposal that involves a street-running stretch through Middle Village does not deserve to be built.
Very welcome news. Thankful the MTA used some common sense even if it took a bit to get there.
Here’s the press conference and the reporter asking the question at around 23 mins.
At this point, they should just use standard subway stock. If anything, they should use IRT cars as they are smaller (51 instead of 60 ft) than the BMT/IND ones and can better handle the potentially tighter curves.
The tunnel plan doesn’t seem to have been finalized.
The article uses words such as “considering”, “inclined”, etc.

The initial phase of engineering and design work will span a year and a half, while transit officials simultaneously work to get the federal government to sign off on environmental reviews. The MTA expects to award the contract in the coming months.
MTA documents show that the project’s construction will be divided into two phases: the first will prepare the 14-mile corridor for the light rail system by demolishing existing structures, constructing new tunnel and bridge structures and repositioning existing freight infrastructure. The second phase will install the light rail system, construct stations, an operation center, order light rail trains and other work to bring the system into service.
The light rail wil have 19 stops and link up to 17 subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road - serving roughly 900,000 people along the corridor, according to the MTA.
The NIMBYs have descended upon the IBX.
This is the guy behind this slop (he’s not even from the city, he’s an LI native):
The typical argument against positive transportation development rears its ugly head with a dash of racism: “We need transit here, but the MTA sucks, and the train station will be a block away from our park which means more people, but not the people we want!”
Our public transportation systems are flawed, mismanaged, and broken, to say the least.
We rely on MTA subways and busses to get us to and from work, school, and home. Yet, when we do put our faith in the billion-dollar public transit system, we are placed in unsanitary, unpredictable, and unsafe conditions.
Having this IBX station on Elliot Avenue just a half block away from Juniper Park, the heart and soul of our neighborhood, is a real concern. Allowing this Eliot Avenue stop opens the door to unwanted solicitation, illegal street vending, and crime.
We’ve been dealing with ongoing illegal vending in Juniper Park and the surrounding areas for quite some time. This Light Rail will increase foot traffic to these areas, exacerbating this issue.
Wow he really hit all the talking points. “Transit sucks, which is why we shouldn’t improve it!” and “I’m actually mad because I’m racist!”
Outstanding
The same kind of person that did not want the E & F train line extended.
I did not bother reading it but he missed “Transit will bring criminals to the neighborhood.”
He didn’t miss it, don’t worry. Every NIMBY argument he has covered.
Allowing this Eliot Avenue stop opens the door to unwanted solicitation, illegal street vending, and crime.
We need to protect our community from what Jackson Heights is living through on Roosevelt Avenue, where federal and state enforcement agencies were called in to combat quality of life issues like open prostitution, drug dealing, illegal vending, and more serious crimes.
There’s no room for Operation Restore Roosevelt here on Eliot Ave in Middle Village. NYC Parks are sacred places for families in the city, and Juniper Park is still among the top parks across the five boroughs.
Is is still true this should be open by 2030? Really doubt that if the “engineering phase” is going to take 2 years
