Can we accept this as a Phase 2 reveal? A tease for more to come this year?

It all looks fine to me… I’ve never understood this controversy at all from the beginning. Hudson yards is built over the rail yards- it intrinsically must be significantly elevated over street level for the engineering to work. I don’t get what people want from this… it seems nice that they’re building it to align with the high line as seen in the render

Sorry. I misunderstood the grading of the site when I posted my earlier comment (now deleted.)

It’s a complicated site. I think some people expected a slope that connects to street level along 12th Ave., under the High Line. That was never an option, because the rail yard tracks run right up to 12th Ave. at street level. There was always going to be a wall of some kind along 12th Ave. at street level.

The “original concept plan in section” (a few posts up) shows how it could slope down to 30th St. I do hope they keep that.

It does need to connect to the street grid as much as possible. Basically any attempt to put parking under the plaza (above the tracks) is going to create such a high plaza that it won’t connect well to the street grid.

If they really need parking, it should go inside one or more of the new buildings.

IMO

There should be a wide, open, seamless transition from the highline over to that grassy opening.

adding layers of stairs that people need to climb is bad urban planning and will create bottle necks.

this rendering is also a careful optical illusion. if you notice the stairs in the foreground bottom right, they are going down over the highline, clearly far above it. But the wall is shown at such an angle that it is hard to tell if it aligns with the height of the highline or is in fact much higher.

if they have to be high because of the tracks that is one thing, but if it’s to build a parking garage it won’t fly. If so, they want the amenity for the luxury tenants and are willing to sacrifice public space to get it. The public would be right to be pissed, bc the public made this whole thing possible.

Let’s all just hope for the best here. The folks in charge of Hudson Yards now understand that there will be major backlash if they abut the High Line because of a parking garage/ amenity spaces. That post is damage control. The open public spaces around the Vessel are great so we know they can do it again. It’s totally feasible for them to do as that conceptual render they posted, and that section. It’s NY after all!

Taken on 1.12.20:

While visiting my friend in Jersey City I noticed the triangles cycle through the colors of the rainbow. I didn’t know they did that until just then. I thought they were always blue.

They were probably just testing for the past few months, could be finalized now
