NEW YORK | Hudson Yards Phase 2 | 1,376 + 1,224 + 1,180 FT | 80 +80 + 74 FLOORS

There is affordable housing in the residential tower

or it could be all “affordable” housing

That height came from the massings, and the river rendering really throws off the true height of the towers due to the perspective and proximity. One Hudson Waterfront could be 950 feet, Wynn NYC could be 1,160 feet, and 40 Hudson Yards could be 1,180 feet (based on my model and the newest rendering)

Seeing everything from a different perspective, I’m really digging Hudson Yards! Each building is unique from anything else, with a potential for THREE new supertalls adding to the already-towering east end of HY! While I’m curious of the empty area north of the Wynn tower, I’m excited to see this all completed in the coming years!

That block is owned by the state/convention center, its been zoned for an office tower and 2 residential buildings with an affordable housing component. Other ideas/plans for it have included having a southern expansion to the convention center.

My reaction to that rendering of all those tall glassy buildings sitting on the edge of the Hudson River has elicited in me an unusual NIMBY reaction regarding the risk of “bird strikes”. Topographical cues such as rivers, and coastlines are a primary means of navigation for migrating birds…

I hope there is some sort of innovation for immiting sound, or light, or whatever to reduce the harmful effects on migrating birds.

The Hudson River is a major migratory flyway for many species of birds.

How You Can Help Birds Safely Visit Our City

As birds fly through our city during spring and fall migration, follow these helpful tips to help keep our feathered friends safe:

Make Your Windows Bird-Safe
https://www.nycgovparks.org/learn/wildlife-in-new-york-city/spring-and-fall-migration

  • Topographical cues, such as coastlines, river courses, and mountain ranges, help to guide the journey.

As migratory birds journey through urban areas, they face threats from human-made structures. Glass-covered buildings present a collision hazard, as the reflection of open space in glass windows may confuse birds. NYC Local Law 15 requires new construction and significantly altered buildings to use materials that reduce bird strike fatalities. You can make your own windows bird-friendly by installing bird-safe glass or adding temporary decals during migration periods.

Tough on the birds if they travel via Hudson and then use C Park as a resting area.

So it’s not actually part of Hudson Yards? I wonder if that would technically mean that the majority of the decking (for which the 3 new buildings would be built on) would be done while leaving that bit of land undeveloped. I’d imagine logistically, it’d make sense for them to get it all built at-once vs waiting months/years to finally develop it

It isn’t, as outlined before

Regardless, the decking/platform is only being built on the portions of land where the railyard actually is, it is not being built on areas where there is nothing/ exposed terra firma. The platforms for both sides were/will only be built between 31st and 33rd St, not 30th to 31st. The commercial tower and residential tower will not be built on a platform, only everything north of those sites will be up to 33rd St just like 10 and 15 Hudson Yards are not on top of the eastern platform.

A deck does not need to be built on the land owned by the state to the north of Phase II.

Here is a crude drawing to explain what is going on
Red - Hudson Yard Proper owned by Related Co/Oxford Group

Dark Blue - Area where there is platform to cover railyard

Light Blue - location of gateway tunnel underneath the complex, 40HY does not need a platform to span the tunnel, its columns will just be designed around it like 270 Park Ave

White - Buildings

I will also admit that I like the resort tower a bit more in @rgarri4’s renderings than I do in the preliminary ones. There’'s some thing about the way his renderings capture the light effects more, further revealing the curves of the building and making it look less flat and boring.

The enhanced curvaceuosness (whether real or perceived) in his renderings make it look like a Pelli design. In the last two of his renderings it looks round/oval in shape and looks like the Salesforce tower in SF, which I generally like.
