I knew long island was Hell

One year of service, and still not a single retail establishment has expressed any interest in opening.

Correct. It’s desolate down there. No options to eat or drink. Nothing.

The asking rent must be too high, or something. You would think a Dunkin would be there.

A dining establishment in the LIRR concourse is possibly opening this summer.

MTA Chair Janno Lieber cited next-to-nil crime rates at the commuter hub on Tuesday as a reason for businesses to rent one of the 32 newly available retail spaces inside. Grand Central Madison, Lieber said, should not have the same problems facing Fulton Transit Center, where a retail giant is citing crime as a reason to break its lease with the agency.

“This facility has been virtually perfect from day one,” Lieber said during a panel inside the station. “I mean, the word is out that this is a really comfortable place to move through, and it’s got the best public bathrooms in New York, which says something about the level of safety.”

Not good.

These passageways are very useful, but they have leaky roofs and broken-down escalators.

I hope this means they’re doing renovations/repairs? These corridors make the MNR to LIRR connection much easier and losing them on weekends would be a real shame.

That’s definitely not the case. If this is happening to allow renovations there would have been a big announcement and a timeline for reopening.

They’re probably doing it to save money - when those hallways are closed they can turn off the lights and have less cops on duty.

There are no known plans to renovate the 45th Street and 47th Street passageways, which opened 25 years ago and have never been properly maintained. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are permanently closed by the end of the decade. It’s a real shame, though, as they have historically proven very useful for Metro North commuters who work north of Grand Central, and for the past year they have provided convenient connections between LIRR and Metro North for passengers who do not have disabilities and are not toting heavy luggage.

whichever company has the escalator maintenance contract must be making record profits. It’s literally been two years of playing hot potato, like half of them are down at any given time

Isn’t Grand Central North just that one small passage? Which tbh looks like it hasn’t seen any updates in 20-30 years

It is composed of four long multi-block passageways, two going north-south between the Metro North concourse and 47th/48th streets and two going east-west under 45th and 47th streets.

This complex of corridors has not been updated or properly maintained since opening in 1999.

Contrast that with the Long Island Rail Road’s West End Concourse (which serves a similar purpose for Penn Station). It opened in 1984 and received a wholesale redesign when Moynihan Train Hall opened decades later. Grand Central North, on the other hand, received no updates when Grand Central Madison opened other than a portal to the LIRR concourse.
