NEW YORK | Gowanus Canal Rezoning

Depending what you are looking for. For me, it is great to see so many construction sites going all at once, a whole neighborhood being created in real time. If you are looking to stroll around, it is not there yet. The parks are not connected, that will take more than a year (or two) to materialize

Yeah I made the trip out there last fall so I can experience the massive construction myself and have a sort of benchmark in my mind for future trips. You won’t fully appreciate the future transformation if you don’t experience how it was before or during the change.

I’d say definitely not, unless, as @streetscaper mentioned, you’re familiar with how the area was previously. In that case, it could be interesting too see. (It’s why I took a walk through last year after I met up with a friend In Carroll Gardens.) Otherwise, it’s just a lot of active construction sites and undistinguished architecture. Many other places more worth your time.

Do you guys think that whole foods is going to get redeveloped? They messed up building that massive surface lot, but they didn’t know property values were going to skyrocket in the area

You should have made the trip last weekend! Powerhouse Arts was having an open house and that alone would have been worth the trip. IMO, I would wait for the fall when the [Gowanus Open Studio Tours](Gowanus Open Studios — Arts Gowanus kick off.

Although it may become more dense, the neighborhood has already transformed beyond all recognition.

601 Union Street

The Gowanus building boom is showing no signs of slowing down.

Manhattan-based real estate firm Avdoo & Partners Development has filed plans with the Department of Buildings to demolish the 1-story industrial building it recently purchased at 601 Union St. in the bustling Brooklyn neighborhood. The vacant property currently on the site spans about 23,000 square feet and stands 20 feet tall, according to city records.

Avdoo & Partners bought 601 Union St., located between Third and Fourth avenues, from S.J. Fuel Co. at the end of 2024 for $29.4 million, property records show. A representative for the developer did not respond to a request for comment about its plans for the site by press time, although a rendering of the project on the company’s website appears to show it intends to build a 6- to 8-story development with commercial space on the ground floor and residential space above. How much such a project would cost is unclear.

455 Smith Street by Lantower Residential, designed by Hill West, is quite a beast.

Hope this doesn’t mess up views from the subway station too much. It will be cool at least to have the El weaving through towers like in Queens.

Where did you find that? Is there actually movement on this project? That’s the “Gowanus Green” site.
