Unexpected and very cool!
When will construction on the park and casino start for the area? Also what’s the plan for all the auto shops and stuff that isn’t owned by the city in College Point
Metropolitan Park was said to break ground sometime in January, but that wasnt the case. couldnt find any info on the actual date, but im thinking a spring start time. The city plans on getting the rest of the shops in the long run for future phases
“Metropolitan Park’s approval is a win for Queens, the local community, and our neighbors who have supported us along the way,” project spokesperson Lauren Henrie told iGB. “Construction is expected to begin soon with the project to be completed in 2030.

I wonder when the proposed renovations of Mets Willets Point will start, since that was a selling point for Metropolitan Park. I assume they’ll need to coordinate with the MTA but a renovation is desperately needed and the station I don’t even think is ADA accessible (thus making it of even higher importance).
i think theyre gonna start with the parking garages to ensure the amount of parking is maintained, then the casino, and the park, food hall, station, and pedestrian bridges will be last. i feel bad for any mets fans that have to drive because it sure will be an annoying and ugly site until its completed
I think it’s good that there is a discussion spanning multiple threads (casino and stadium). But there is one particular member who is going a bit overboard. Back to the topic of Etihad Park:
If they can get the Olympics here, I wonder if future FIFA matches can be played here as well. I think the only major constraint would be seating capacity.
It’s got excellent transit access via the 7 and LIRR and is quite close to LGA and soon the Metropolitan Park casino which will feature hotels.
Capacity may not always be an issue! Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympics was initially too small to host the volumes required, but they installed temporary seating (colored yellow) which has since been removed and replaced with curtain walls.
The capacity of this stadium is about 25,000. That is significantly smaller than the smallest stadium to host WC matches this year, BMO Field in Toronto which has a capacity of 45,000. It’ll take a whole lot of temporary seating to reach that capacity. Stadiums that host FIFA WC matches tend to be about 50K + in capacity, which is why in some ways I feel this project is a missed opportunity for NYC.
It may be a missed opportunity but the reality is having a stadium half empty for most games gives bad optics on TV and the fans in the seats unfortunately.
Just look at RBA in Harrison with the same capacity but never even half full. MLS games in this area have traditionally not drawn well unless there is a major star here/visiting.
