Such exciting times. I’d love to see a 2000 foot to the roof in NYC in the next few years get proposed. It’s gotta happen!!! I’m sure there’s some billionaires out there that would want to be the first to say they live 2000 feet in the sky or even taller!
Midtown East or Hudson Yards are the more likely areas of Manhattan to have the first 2000ft tower and it will most likely be commercial rather than residential given the zoning in those districts and the demand for more office space in the city.
I don’t think that NY will ever have a 2,000’ tower.
I agree with Robert. NYC doesn’t need a 2,000 foot tower, though.
This island is still the envy of the world.
It truly is. When you have Parisians say they prefer NY to Paris, it means something.
I’ve had the fortune of traveling a lot in Europe, and nothing comes close. Sure they have nice cities, but I don’t get that excitement. That energy like I do here. And I’ve tried to look for it. Just hasn’t happened anywhere. Maybe Chicago, but that’s about it.
It will be at the very least a decade before any potential 2000ft tower is proposed. Then again, I never would’ve anticipated the amount of towers in the 1000ft range we are currently getting (or about to get). So anything is possible but it’ll definitely be awhile.
That’s too long!! I hope the Madison Ave tower is 2000 feet when it’s proposed or Hudson spire ends up being 2000 feet when it’s finally unveiled
I wouldn’t rule out a 2000 footer. Space is always needed and the sky is as open as can be.
And there is a reason its called “the capitol of the world”
Believe it or not, on the far west side, there are a lot of sites that could hold huge towers.
Fascinating. I hope more than one of these potentials gets realized. Nyc will need a new tower to soar above them all just as the esb did for so many years. Just think, a massive plateau of 700 feet towers, a higher plateau around 1200-1400 feet and then the king of them all, 2000 feet!!! Ok sorry for the rant. Will focus on CPT again.
As an aside, can we create a topic to discuss megatalls in NYC? It would be for any potential proposals such as Hudson spire, Madison Ave or any other info people might have. Also a spot to just speculate about what’s coming.
That would be the ideal spot for a megatall
A little off-topic again, but what’s the tallest building that could be built outside of Manhattan? More specifically, could a 2000 foot tower be built in say downtown Brooklyn or Long Island City? I’m talking demand and cost aside, is the zoning there to support it?
Some sites have essentially no height limit but nationwide, there is the FAA cutoff of 600m unless its a communication antenna. Anything else would have to get special permission. But with enough rights and parcels assembled, there is always the chance for something tall to rise. Hopefully 340 flat bush starts the trend of super talls in DoBro.
Fascinating! So as we head into the future, there are some sites in NYC that could support a tower as tall as the Burj Khalifa if the necessary approvals were sorted out?
Theoretically around the country yes. Problem is the FAA, and something on the level of 2700’, in the case of Khalifa, would require a lot of studies and take a very long time in terms of just soft costs and preparation. A vision at most, but… it could happen down the line. Either in NYC or Chicago. IDK, I have a feeling Chicago could down the line reclaim the tallest title. But… for sake of being close to NYC, I hope its here.
Even might I say Dallas. There are some cities that have an unlimited FAR on some sites. If the demand is there, a multi-use supertall or megatall could theoretically rise.
It seems to be the theme that NYC never builds the tallest anymore, but will eventually catch up to what was the tallest at one point in time. Willis Tower is now going to be surpassed, albeit 40 years later. Does this mean in 2050 NYC will have a 2700 foot tower? I argue much sooner since new technologies (some of which we can’t yet imagine) will give us the ability to build taller, faster, and cheaper than ever before. After all, I’m sure tourists and locales alike would love to visit an observation deck 2500 feet above the streets! I know I would.
But I digress; right now 1550 to the roof of Nordstrom is an incredible height and I’m glad it’s happening!
Thanks Robert! Its on its way!
I cant wait to see the cantilever take shape
