totally agree, I always thought it was too short. A great design but way too short.
It almost didn’t even get built! It was in the planning stages when 9/11 happened. I watched a documentary on that building. It’s one I always go to see when I am in NYC

Is there room to add a spire?
Having six BMUs on the roof of this building is insane. Most equivalent buildings would have no more than two. They’ll never use them all at the same time anyway
Keeping all of the windows truly clean on a building this tall is quite a challenge. Most buildings only clean once a year — twice at most — and I know from experience that windows can get quite dirty between cleanings. Since this building is all about the views, perhaps they’re promising residents more frequent window cleaning.
But of course window cleaning day/week means a warning to residents so they can close their shades for privacy. Residents of such a high-end building wouldn’t put up with that constantly.
So I can see a need for this many BMUs if they want to clean all of the windows frequently and/or quickly (my bet is both).
Still… wow, it is a lot!
I guess that makes sense. If they used them all at once, it still is the same amount of man-hours, but almost all drops can be conducted at once thus shortening the window for tenant precautions to a week or two. I know old school buildings where window washing/brick cleaning took many months and the windows were obstructed by rigging the entire time. Not a good look on an expensive building.
Exactly.
Props to that photographer, he made this rather bland building look handsome and commanding.
Are they still testing the lighting?
Whatever lighting they turned on a couple of weeks ago, they are still turning on and leaving on at night. But nothing new.
last night seemed a little brighter, but maybe that was just me. hopefully we see the full crown lit soon
