I’m no NIMBY but, This really does not belong on the Upper West Side nor the Upper East Side for that matter. Transfer the air rights to Hells Kitchen, (if only it was that easy)!

I agree, I would hate to see this built in this location.

It won’t ever have company that tall. The ABC site is a unique block of midtown zoning in a neighborhood that’s otherwise zoned with a much lower FAR.

Neighborhoods can always be rezoned.

Zoning changes all the time. To say it “won’t ever have company that tall” in a city like NY is short sighted at best. Maybe not for a very long time but it will.

this kind of reminds me of one court square in queens because when it was built it was taller than everything around it and now Long Island city has buildings just as tall and taller than it

Great stuff, hope it happens! If we never allowed “sore thumbs” and obsessed over neighborhood character the Upper West Side would still be a bunch of 2-story shacks. The truth is there is more demand to live on the UWS than Hells Kitchen, in part because of the park, and we should let more people live there.

Also I have to say “I’m no NIMBY but…” is one of the most popular NIMBY phrases I’ve heard in 10 years of attending and presiding over neighborhood meetings.

Lol are you fr? Manhattan is a tiny island with unlimited demand. If you think skyscrapers won’t start inching northward especially with transit expansion you’re delusional

Nobody thought back in 2000 Brooklyn would have a skyline. Now today, downtown Brooklyn has a larger skyline than Los Angeles. Anything can happen

There are already quite a few large buildings along Broadway south of 72nd—not as tall as the one talked about for 66th but in the 40-50 story range. My building has 41. And north of 72nd zoning has allowed a lot of as of right new apartments in the 18 floor range.

By that logic, the West Village should already be a sea of skyscrapers, shouldn’t it? It’s probably the hottest neighborhood in the world and it’s been served by world-class transit for a century. For that matter, are there any realistic proposals for supertalls in that part of the island?

Downtown Brooklyn is not a comparison for the Upper West Side — it’s a CBD — nor is the waterfront, which was mostly industrial. Neither of them has the concentration of wealth of the UWS. And that’s my point: where wealth is concentrated, NIMBYism dominates. Maybe I’m being cynical, but unless money somehow becomes a nonfactor in local politics, rich homeowners will get their way more often than not.

An as-of-right 1200 footer that’s taking advantage of a quirk of zoning is one thing. And frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if less-wealthy neighborhoods with less political clout started seeing very tall skyscrapers in the near future. But rezoning the UWS for supertalls is a whole other ball of wax. I’d love to be proven wrong.

I don’t think a skyscraper over 1000 feet high is possible here at the moment. Something like this older version is more likely.
