Yeah that’s the old Zaha Hadid redevelopment plan, which got shelved in favor of this renovation of the existing building.
Nice. Wish they could of gone forward with this proposal, would’ve stood out really well.
Nice photo, Claire.
You are my new favorite forum member.
It would be great if someone picked up the 660 5th Zaha Hadid design and built it. The perfect location would be site K across from the Javits center.
I really like this.
I hope that demo on Rolex starts soon.
This reclad reminds me of what is now the salesforce tower on bryant park
- ie nice enough at the cost of some personality
I just want a similar thing done at the Socony-Mobil building. Replacing that outdated aluminum facade with something more appropriate for the 21st century would be a lifesaver for that building.
I think that building is landmarked, so I don’t think that that can occur.
There is a ‘vintage beauty’ to those metallic panels with the diamond pattern: they must be some sort of collector item. I would like to know what has happened to those panels. There are many people who have a real nostalgic feeling for that facade; see the YIMBY post by the 73 Year Old Lawyer who worked in that building as a young delivery boy. I bet he would pay a hansom sum to have one of those panels framed and hanging on the wall of his home office.
My guess they are made of Aluminum and quite heavy guage thickness. The are in perfect condition after all these years and did not need replacing due to deterioration. That facade was a classic beauty that was well deserving of landmark protection.
I do, however, see the massive improvement to the interior space by expanding those original windows to the new oversized windows. There is now ample light and views for the interior spaces; the relative value of the property has been significantly increased with this new cladding.
I do want one of those vintage facade panels. I hope they did not dump them as ‘scrap metal’… ![]()

A major lease is said to be in the works for Macquarie Group at Brookfield’s 660 Fifth Avenue, the redesigned tower stripped of its former 666 “satanic” address (extremely cringy stupid superstitious nonsense). Other deals are also poised to happen at the unrecognizably transformed tower.
The new facade is bland looking, but I know this was a needed improvement to update the overall ‘function’ of the building.
The metal panels with the embossed star motif were a classic look; and a high quality material. They looked good as new - even after being exposed to the element for decades. If cleaned and polished they would look even better.
I was pleased to see another building with that same metal panel cladding; it was near Lexington Avenue around 40th street. I hope they keep that facade in place for ever; it is classic look.
I took photo …not sure of exact location. This is NOT 666 5th - photo taken last week.
Socony-Mobil Building 42nd and Lexington? It is landmarked.
